From the Dean
I have been reading with interest the articles published in TAO over the past couple of months by John Walker about the findings of the Task Force on Long-range Planning. The article in the December 2012 magazine titled "The State of Mainstream Religion In America; Implications for the American Guild of Organists" provides enough fodder for a year's worth of columns so I will return to it in future columns, I am sure.
As has been reported in the media, membership in mainline churches has declined year by year. Along with this financial contributions to these churches has declined. Most of us are employed in these mainline churches. For those of you in churches that are bucking the trend and whose membership and music programs are growing-Hooray for you! Go for it! For the majority who are in churches with declining membership and seeing your music program and the funding for it being cut, do not despair. Remember that the total declines are numerically small. While a particular congregation may be declining faster than average, there are still good opportunities out there for church musicians. Do not allow a failure of fundraising to pass as a reason to gut the church program. Many churches are using consultants to improve the giving of their membership. Cutting programs, including music, does not foster the kind of activity that will attract new parishioners. Unfortunately in many cases, changing jobs is the only way to obtain an increase in pay or benefits for a church musician. The new church all of a sudden finds out that they are out of touch in terms of compensation of musicians and improves the salary especially if they have a good candidate who sticks to their guns in this regard.
Well, I could go on all day. I will be encouraging next year's program committee to plan a meeting, or meetings on issues of professional concerns which I don't believe we have focused much on of late in the chapter.

Upcoming Cleveland Chapter Events

JANUARY CHAPTER EVENT
 | | Newberry Organ |
Gallery Organ Open House Saturday, January 26, 2013 - 10 am to 12 noon. Church of the Covenant 11205 Euclid Ave. Cleveland Organ crawl with the new Richards-Fowkes tracker organ. Jonathan Moyer and Fern Jennings, hosts
Jonathan reports that the new organ has been delivered and is in the process of being set up. Organ builder Bruce Fowkes will discuss with us installation to date and how it will proceed. This is not the open house as originally planned but an event just for us. The open house will be held on March 3. That would be an excellent opportunity to return to see the fully installed instrument. Jonathan thinks that a one hour program from 10-11 will be sufficient for our time in the loft. Then you will be free to visit the Art Museum or other University Circle Institution or restaurant for lunch. Here is a link for information about the builder: http://www.richardsfowkes.com/pages/5tech/index.php

AGO CLEVELAND GOOGLE CALENDAR
Do you use the Google Calendar on our website: agocleveland.org? The idea behind this calendar was to have a resource for members to use when planning their own programs. This calendar extends farther ahead than our weekly update calendar listings. At this time we need a member who is willing to post those updates. Training will be provided. Please contact dean@agocleveland.org if you are willing to take on this task.

| REGIONAL CONVENTION
The website and registration for the Region V Convention to be held in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek June 30-July 3 are now open. http://www.agokalamazoo.org/. Schedules, information about recitalist and organs are available on the site. They are billing this as a walkable convention other than the bus ride to Battle Creek. Plenty of time is allowed for lunch or returning to your room during the day. A four hour drive from Cleveland with an affordable registration and accommodation price makes this an excellent value in a close-to-home convention experience for Clevelanders. Did I mention I will be presenting a workshop on Guild Exams?
