MacGregor, B
Barbara MacGregor

As we begin the New Year many of us have indulged in some resolutions or goals for 2013. Among those goals might be plans to continue to develop our musical skills through lessons, reading current articles in our TAO and other journals, attending professional meetings or conferences

or just planning to select and learn some new organ or choral music. All of these are effective ways to remain current in our field.  With information from a 2011 Chapter Membership Survey our Program Committee planned several programs this season that have a strong educational basis, especially the February and March programs listed. I hope that you will look into these opportunities to work with fine leaders on many aspects of both organ and choral work.

Saturday, February 9th is TREBLEFEST at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

AGO members are welcome to attend all or any part of the day to observe master choral conductor, Ben Hutto will replace Stephen Cleobury as the clinician.  No registration fee will be charged for observers - a free-will donation in the basket at the registration table would be appreciated. Lunch is available for $5. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes with Evensong at 3 p.m.

Repertory for the rehearsals and Evensong is from the Anglican choral tradition:

Introit:  I will worship - George Dyson

Responses - plainsong

Psalm 23 - John Goss (chant)

Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis - Philip Moore

Anthem:  A Song of Wisdom - Charles Stanford

Saturday, March 9th is the CHURCH MUSIC WORKSHOP co-sponsored by Cleveland AGO and

Cleveland National Pastoral Musicians. The location is the lovely chapel of the Ursuline Educational Center in Pepper Pike. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. and will continue with choices from five different class sessions given by our area leadership.  Topics for these class sessions were suggested by you,  our members.  Cliff Hill is providing choral and keyboard music.  The day will conclude before 3 p.m. with a  reflective service of Word and Music for Lent. Come prepared to find resources for your work and your spirit. Prior registration is required. Look for detailed information in our weekly email Updates.

With best wishes for a new musical year,

Barbara MacGregor

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

Stanley, John
John Stanley
English composer and organist John Stanley was born in London on this date in 1712. At about the age of two, he had the misfortune to fall on a marble hearth with a china basin in his hand, an accident which left him almost blind.

He began studying music at the age of seven. Under the guidance of Maurice Greene, composer and organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, he studied "with great diligence, and a success that was astonishing" (Burney). At the age of nine he played the organ, probably as an occasional deputy, at All Hallows Bread Street. The organist died on 23 September 1723 and exactly one month later eleven-year-old Stanley was appointed organist to the church at a salary of £20 per annum.

When he was fourteen "in preference to a great number of candidates" (Burney) he was chosen as organist at St Andrew's, Holborn and at the age of seventeen became the youngest person ever to obtain the Bachelor of Music degree (B.Mus.) at Oxford University.
In 1779 Stanley succeeded William Boyce as Master of the King's Band of musicians. In this capacity he composed many New Year and Birthday odes to the King but unfortunately this music has not survived. He composed cantatas, oratorios, instrumental music and notably three volumes of voluntaries for organ (1748, 1752, and 1754). Nearly all of the voluntaries feature a short, slow introduction followed by either a solo-stop movement (such as the so-called trumpet voluntaries) or a fugue.
