From the Dean
 | | Fern Jennings |
There are two opportunities for members to give a gift to the AGO this season. We hope you will consider a gift to the Chapter. The first is to the AGO Scholarship Fund. See Carol Neff's letter below in this regard. The Executive Committee has set a goal of $2,000 for the fund this year. For years the expectation has been that proceeds of the Chapter Investment Account would be used for this purpose but as you know investments are producing little income at this time. We just need to step up and annually fund through our gifts this important work of the AGO. The suggested donation to the scholarship fund is $20. If you can do more, we thank you.
A second place for gifts to the AGO is through the funding of one or a part of one of the prizes for the Regional Young Artist Competition. We will be hosting our chapter competition in March. The winner of our local competition will go on to the Regional level competition in June. We have a good track of record of our local winners who go on to win at the Regional level. The prize levels for the competition are $500: first prize, $300; second prize; and third prize, $200. In addition the winner will receive from the Chapter funds to attend and compete at the Regional Competition. We are seeking named prize donors for the various prizes. A prize could be given by one individual or company or by several individuals pooling their gifts. I would be happy to discuss various options with you if you are interested.
We thank you in advance for you generosity,
Fern

Please consider this opportunity to support our educational program with a tax-deductible contribution today. Donors will be recognized in the weekly AGO update and in our Annual Report. Gifts can be made in honor of or in memory of a special person. All checks should be made payable to Cleveland Chapter, American Guild of Organists with Scholarship Fund on the memo line. AGO GIFTS
This year as you plan your holiday purchases, keep in mind the Guild's online catalog of educational resources. They have just added a new convention workshop recording from the 2012 Nashville Convention. Tom Trenney's well received workshop on Improvisation and Service Playing was recorded as a DVD and is now available for $10. This year with every holiday purchase, they will enclose a complimentary CD featuring the 2010 NYACOP winner Dongho Lee. You may also substitute Universe of Poetry, by the 2008 NYACOP winner, Michael Unger, or Water and Light, by Scott Montgomery (2006) by adding either one to your shopping cart.
The gift selections can be found at agohq.org or in this month's TAO. To login to your account, enter your username, which is the first initial of your first name, followed by your last name, e.g., jdoe for "John Doe." Your password is your member ID, which is found each month on your TAO Magazine address label. You can also contact AGO National Headquarters for your password or other assistance logging in. All current members will receive a 10% member discount.
YOU MAY HAVE MISSED ...
Two great pieces from NPR on Tuesday. One an interview with Alisa Weilerstein about her new recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto with Daniel Barenboim and the other a piece about the original edition Bay Psalm Books owned by Old South Church in Boston. The church plans to auction off one of the books. The piece did not say how much the auction is expected to fetch for the church. Here is the link:http://www.npr.org/programs/all-things-considered/

 | | Dave Brubeck |
Today would have been the 92nd birthday of Dave Brubeck, who, sadly, died one day short of that milestone on Wednesday, December 5, 2012. Here is a link to his bio.Currently on the site you will hear some of Brubeck's Christmas arrangements- not the usual "muzak" types. Fun. Here is a link to his New York Times obituary. |
