I must confess as I write this on Monday, that I will be unable to attend the Daryl Robinson recital this week. Even as I was writing to encourage your attendance, I knew I would not be able to attend as Wednesday is my choir rehearsal evening. I suspect that this against the grain tradition goes back to the days when Robert Shaw was the Director of Music at First Unitarian Church and had other duties on Thursday evenings. In any event the program committee had to go with the date that was available at the Cathedral for scheduling this concert. We are most grateful to the Helen D. Schubert Concert Series, St. John Cathedral and its Music Director and AGO member Greg Heislman for co-sponsoring and hosting the recital. I hope that many of you were able to attend the recital in support of organ music and the Guild in Cleveland. ClevelandClassical.com was scheduled to cover the concert. Next week we hope to have a link for the review of the concert.

Be sure to check today and in successive weekly updates for updated information about our next chapter event--the November hymn festival with John Ferguson.

Best to you,

Fern

This Date in Musical History

Gounod_Charles
Charles Gounod
On this date in 1893, Charles Gounod, French composer of sacred music, died. Gounod is best known for his setting of the Ave Maria, a melody which he set over Bach's C Major Prelude from the Well-Tempered Clavier. He is also the composer of "March of a Marionette"--a piece known to many as Alfred Hitchcock's theme music. A piece which works well as an organ Postlude is "March Pontifical" or "March Romaine" as it is usually titled in organ collections. This piece is the official anthem of the Pope.
