Someone You Know
Our mission is to serve as an advocate and a community resource by promoting positive mental health in Aiken County. The needs are many and I am reminded daily that many are affected by mental illness, depression and suicide. In fact, it may be "Someone You Know". I recently had the opportunity to join Donna Moore-Wesby at SHOUT radio for an Education Matters on-air discussion about depression and the myths that are prevalent in the African American community. Donna and I discussed the important truth that depression and other mental health conditions are medical conditions. We reminded the listeners that just as you may be diagnosed diabetic as a result of problems with the functioning of your pancreas, you may also experience problems with your mental health as a result of your brain functioning. After all, the pancreas and the brain are both vital organs. We had an interactive discussion with callers who shared their own stories and how they had acknowledged the need for help and had learned to survive by caring for their mental health. MHA Aiken provides many valuable resources on our website, www.mha-aiken.org. I encourage you to visit the Education and Advocacy page of the website listed under Our Programs. Here, you will find a confidential tool, the On-line Depression Screen. This vital tool can be used to determine whether you, a friend or family member may need to see a medical professional. If so, you'll find a list of local resources as well as other support groups and resources. Remember, someone you know may be struggling. Our website and our services are available to help you start the conversation towards positive mental health.
If you are member of a group, either social or professional, and are interested in free training on recognizing the Signs of Suicide, we can provide a free, basic but critical training for your group at no cost. Join us in our efforts by educating yourself on the important subject of mental health. Become an advocate for positive mental health in Aiken County!

Helping the Homeless
As the county coordinator for the 2013 Point in Time Homeless count required by HUD, I was able to partner with all agencies that might encounter someone who is homeless. Data is incomplete at this time; but, based on the information I have received the number has at least tripled since the last count in 2011. This data is critical as it helps each agency as well as our county as a whole respond appropriately to this need.
Because our services to the homeless through Nurture Home are so critical and are the costliest of all programs, we are encouraged by the support we receive. In January, Nurture Home received a $500 donation from the Association of American University Women, We were also selected for an award through The Perlman Foundation in the amount of $2,000. Nurture Home has remained at capacity for over a year with a waiting list. The women in Nurture Home are returning to college, graduating with GEDs and taking steps to careers...all accomplishments that will result in an end to homelessness for their families.

Save the Date!
People are talking about the fabulous Willcox and about 2013 Aiken's Cookin' with Celebrity Chefs, our annual fundraiser. We already have three first time chef teams and are working hard to make the event even more memorable than the last (and I'm not just talking cuisine) If you missed the event last year, I recommend you make plans to attend now! Save the date...June 14th at the historic Willcox!
Finally, thank you for your interest, your support, and your encouragement in our efforts! Aiken County has many needs and it can be difficult to contribute to all agencies. If you supported us through a year-end gift, a sponsorship at our event, a donation to Operation Santa, or by attending Aiken's Cookin' with Celebrity Chefs, your gift is greatly appreciated! Our important work would not be possible without your support!
Gratefully,
Lisa Tindal
