Ready for the Winter Games? Get Your Kitchen in Tip-top Shape
Planning to camp out on the couch this month to catch the Winter Games in Sochi? If so, make sure you have a smart snacking strategy in place. Shaun White's high-flying flips aren't fueled by fatty foods, so keep your menu - and your plumbing - lean and clean. What does your plumbing have to do with it, you ask? Fats, oils and grease (FOG) from cooking fatty foods can clog your sink and sewer pipes causing messy backups and expensive repairs. So avoid the hassle of calling a plumber and stay true to your New Year's resolution by picking healthier versions of your snack food favorites, like these great recipes from Cooking Light. And, to keep your household plumbing and sewer pipes in tip-top shape, just like those winter Olympians, follow these easy steps.
Pour cooled oil and grease into a container, store in the freezer to solidify, then throw into the trash.

Use a sink strainer to catch the scraps when peeling, slicing, and cutting vegetables for vegetable trays, potato salad or soups.

Never use the garbage disposal. Throw food scraps in the trash or compost them.

Before washing dishes, scrape or wipe leftover food, batters and dressing into the trash can.

Need more FOG-free tips and kitchen cleanup advice? We've got 'em at askHRgreen.org.

Artist Vik Muniz: Poetics of Perception
See It Feb. 7 - April 27, 2014
Prepare to be inspired and engaged when you see Poetics of Perception, an exhibition featuring the work of artist Vik Muniz, opening Feb. 7 at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach. Internationally recognized for his startling use of recycled and repurposed materials, Muniz creates stunning images while investigating the history of art and of visual reproduction. By employing diverse objects such as toys, diamonds, industrial garbage and minute magazine clippings, the artist creates tableaus which are preserved through photographic reproduction. The exhibition runs through April 27, 2014. Muniz's award-winning documentary, Waste Land, filmed in the artist's native Brazil among the world's largest garbage dump, will also be screened during the course of the exhibition.
Applications are still being accepted for the askHRgreen.org Pet Waste Station Grant Program! Pet waste stations make scooping the poop easy and convenient. That's a big deal since pet waste is a major source of water pollution in Hampton Roads. askHRgreen.org will provide a FREE pet waste station to any neighborhood association, property manager or civic organization willing to install and maintain a pet waste station in their community. Supplies are limited, so help us clean up our local waterways by applying online today!
