Spring Showers
April showers bring May flowers. That's the saying, right? But have you ever noticed that April showers can also bring flooding? While our flowers love the rain, our lawn care practices might be causing our streets to flood. When yard debris (grass, branches, leaves, etc.) is left in the street, rain water washes it to a storm drain where it gets stuck and blocks the path of rain running off the street. This can result in flooding, travel delays and damage to private property. So, embrace the rain by bagging yard debris and knowing your locality's collection schedule. You can also install a rain barrel to capture the rain and use it later to water plants. Read more about what happens when it rains.

Honor Earth Day by Pitching in for the Great American Cleanup 2013

GAC 2013 April 22 marks the 43rd Earth Day celebration, and while we usually say every day is Earth Day for askHRgreen.org, it's helpful to step back and reflect on the wonder of the natural environment that surrounds us every day. Nothing beats a day on one of our local waterways, but our environment is also about the neighborhood parks we enjoy and the clean tap water we drink. To keep the spirit of Earth Day alive, please volunteer for a clean up project near you as part of this spring's Great American Cleanup. A host of projects that span our region have been scheduled from March through May. Find an event that's meaningful to you. Let Mother Earth, and your community, know how much you care.

Pamper Your Poplar on Arbor Day

Arbor Day When the first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska, it was estimated that more than one million trees were planted that day. This year we celebrate Arbor Day on April 26. While this isn't the season to plant trees in Hampton Roads (fall plantings are preferred), it is a great time to care for the trees already in the ground. Green Living is Comin' Up!

Green Living Cover In a couple of weeks, we'll be distributing the 2nd edition of askHRgreen.org's Green Living in your local newspaper. And have we got some great green news planned for you! In this year's guide you can: explore our Hampton Roads watersheds and see why the time to improve our region's water quality is at hand; go beyond the big blue bin and examine the business of recycling; learn tips for keeping a "green" yard from a true garden guru; follow the path of water through our vast (and often forgotten) infrastructure; and learn why it's time to "break up" with a common household appliance. Look for Green Living on April 17 in both The Virginian-Pilot and the Daily Press
