The Gorilla Doctors is dedicated to saving mountain and Grauer's gorilla lives through hands-on medical care. Gorilla Doctors helps gorillas by monitoring their health, providing direct care to ill and injured gorillas, and by reducing the threat of human disease transmission.

 

The Gorilla Doctors is powered by the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project and the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center.

Research has proven that by intervening to save sick and injured mountain gorillas, the Gorilla Doctors has played a vital role in the population's dramatic increase over the last 10 years.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Gorilla Doctors team!

 

November has been a busy month for the Gorilla Doctors: our veterinarians gave emergency medical treatment to a female mountain gorilla on a rainy evening in late November, we celebrated the largest and most successful fundraiser in Gorilla Doctors history, staff from all three countries gathered in Uganda for a special retreat and the vets assessed silverback Isabukuru's severe shoulder wound and a pair of newborn infants.

A Medical Intervention for Female Izihirwa

 

Gorilla Doctors conducted an emergency veterinary intervention on 8-year-old mountain gorilla female Izihirwa of Musilikale group on November 22. As the sun set the veterinarians worked in the rain to complete a full physical exam and collect samples for diagnostics and future research. Read more on the Gorilla Doctors blog.

"Gorilla Love" Fundraiser a Monumental Success

Beverly Hills rolled out the green carpet for the Gorilla Doctors of Africa on Monday, November 4th. Three hundred wildlife enthusiasts and adventure travelers turned out to show their "Gorilla Love" at the prestigious ACE Gallery. This was the first major west coast fundraiser for the Gorilla Doctors, and without a doubt, was deemed a smashing success by all in attendance. Read more on the Gorilla Doctors blog.

21-year-old dominant silverback Isabukuru sustained a severe wound on his right shoulder on November 19th. Dr. Dawn trekked to the group to assess the injury and conduct a routine health check of the group the following day. The wound was clean and dry and Isabukuru was seen cleaning the wound periodically throughout the observation. Read more on the Gorilla Doctors blog.

Staff Convenes in Uganda for a Team-Building Retreat

The Gorilla Doctors team recently convened at Uganda's Mount Gahinga Lodge for a special team-building retreat. Long-time Board Member and former Director of the Morris Animal Foundation (which founded MGVP) Dr. Rob Hilsenroth facilitated the meeting and Directors Drs. Two newborn infants in the Ntambara mountain gorilla group in Volcanoes National Park required veterinary assessments this month. Dr. Dawn trekked to the group to check on Kubaka and Nahimana's infants after the pair had reportedly been whimpering, with red, inflamed skin. Read more on the blog.
