You will likely be spending lots of time using your computer over the next 5 years. Spending just a few minutes now will help you make an informed decision about what to look for in a new computer and accessories - and get the best deal.

If you still have a computer purchased prior to 2009 with the Windows XP operating system, Microsoft has stopped supporting it and will no longer be releasing critical security updates for the 13-year-old operating system. Windows XP will continue to work, however it will become increasingly more dangerous to operate if connected to the internet. Virus and malware authors have reportedly been working on infections that target vulnerabilities in Windows XP that are no longer being patched.

The average lifespan of computer hardware is about 5 years, so a computer with Windows XP or Vista is well past its lifespan. Now is the time to upgrade to a new computer that will be faster, more reliable and secure. Fortunately new computers are more affordable than those that were sold over 5 years ago.

FAQwhatOSFAQ: Should I get Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or Mac OS X?

Local "big box" stores mainly stock computers with Microsoft's newest "Windows 8.1" operating system which was released as Windows 8 in October 2012, followed a year later with a minor update to "8.1". Windows 8/8.1 has been described as "revolutionary" and "reimagined". On the other hand it's "unfamiliar" and "unintuitive". See this article for information and a look at Windows 8.

"Windows 10" will be released July 29. It is basically a mix of the user interface and best features of Windows 7 and Windows 8 combined. You can preview the look and features of Windows 10 here.

For a little while longer the more familiar "Windows 7" will still be available preinstalled on new computers direct from manufacturers websites such as Dell and HP even though it's not widely available in local big box stores. See the links at the bottom of this newsletter for specific deals on new computers with Windows 7. If you prefer not to shop online, Computer Techs can do the shopping for you and get you a good deal on a new computer with Windows 7.

On the other hand, maybe you're someone who would like to learn a new operating system. Perhaps the new touch-centric features of Windows 8 are compelling enough to learn something new. If you decide to discover Windows 8 and shop for a new computer at local big box stores, we recommend that you spend some time using the computers on display to discover if Windows 8 is really right for you.

Whether you decide on Windows 7 or 8.1, Microsoft announced that you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free during the first year after its release should you decide to.

Lastly, perhaps you may be persuaded to switch to a Mac by younger acquaintances, or if visiting the Apple Store. Apple's Macs feature the OS X operating system which is also very different from Windows XP and Windows 7. We generally don't recommend Macs due to the steep learning curve, limited software choices compared to Windows, and equipment expense that's more than double the price of Windows computers.

considerations
Important things to consider before your purchase

Since stores are making little to no profit in the sale of a new PC they will likely try to up-sell you on unnecessary items such as an upgraded version of Windows, security software, extended warranties and their in-store or remote tech services. The only add-ons I usually recommend is a 500GB or greater external hard drive for backup purposes, and in certain circumstances I recommend Microsoft Office with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. If you have questions about an up-sell, feel free to ask me.

Please consider our IN-HOME services to get your new computer set-up properly, and compare us to other stores offerings:

· Set-up and connect your new computer to your network, printer and other external hardware.
If you get Windows 8 from a local store you'll likely notice that they don't specialize in in-home service, or they charge much more for the option. We'll make sure all of your external devices work with your new computer.

 · Transfer data (documents, pictures, music, etc.) and compatible programs from an old computer. Some tech services just transfer your data to a folder on your desktop - we organize your data and put it in the right folders and programs.

· Remove trialware and unnecessary adware. We also setup free security, backup and Office software.

· Make backup recovery DVDs of the factory default software and operating system.

· Customization and explanation of Windows features. We'll setup the menus, controls and buttons with familiarity of your old computer.

· Consulting about questions you have about your new computer system.

· Recommended storage/disposal/donation of an old unused computer

generalspecs
General recommended computer specifications

If you prefer to shop on-your-own there are generally just 3 specifications you need to look for as shown below. While there are less expensive computers than what I recommend, they have slower processors, speed will be sub-par and other components are of lesser quality. Avoid towers with the smaller "slimline" case design, or all-in-one touchscreen computers - since replacement parts are non-standard and expensive to replace should a failure occur.

Processor:

Intel: Core M, i3, i5 or i7 processor

AMD: A6, A8 or A10 processor

RAM/Memory:

4 GB or higher

Hard Drive storage size:

128GB or higher SSD or

512GB or higher HDD

When purchasing a laptop computer I recommend visiting a store to view a display model. Look at the clarity of the screen and try the keyboard to make sure it meets your needs.

Do you hate shopping for a new computer? Let us shop for you.

If the thought of going to the store, fighting the crowds, salespeople and choices overwhelm you - then don't do it. Let us purchase your new desktop computer equipment for you, set it up in your home, and show you how to use it. If you are considering a laptop/notebook computer, we will help you order one direct from the manufacturer, then set it up after it's delivered to you.

If you're considering a laptop, take the following points into consideration when shopping:

* Does the screen look good (can you see the pixels or not)?

* Is the screen the right size and can you see it well?
* Is the laptop too heavy?
* Do the keys on the keyboard feel good, is it easy to type on?
* Do you like the color?
