Phony calls from "Microsoft" on the rise

Despite repeated warnings we continue to get several calls each month from people who have received telephone calls from someone from "Microsoft" or "Windows", and coerced into paying hundreds of dollars for made-up problems with their computer.

Article2Over a billion passwords stolen - time to change yours

Recent news reports have indicated that a Russian crime gang has gotten ahold of over one billion website passwords. In light of this, it's time to change your passwords. You should change your email password first since it's the most likely one that's been compromised - particularly if you have a AT&T/Yahoo account.

Article2Cloud storage services back up your files and gives you access from multiple devices

Most households have multiple computing devices these days - such as desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablet portable devices - and many want the ability to synchronize files between their devices.

There are many companies that offer cloud (aka "over the internet") syncing and storage services. In this article I highlight 3 of the most popular from companies you've likely heard before - Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox. All 3 of these services will backup and sync one folder and any sub-folders within it.

Article3How to install AVG AntiVirus updates and keep the free version
AVG AntiVirus releases program updates from time-to-time, and you will likely see pop-ups in the lower-right corner of your screen when an update is available. Whenever there's an update that requires your interaction, they will try to entice you into upgrading to a for-pay version of AVG or make other unwanted changes. But if you follow the simple instructions below, you can continue with the free protection that is recommended for most home computer users at no charge.
CheckupHas it been a while since you've had a check-up for your computing devices?

Technology, computers and the internet are changing every day. You need a Computer Techs technology professional to come to your home on a regular basis for an in-home check-up and consultation to make sure your technology is secure and up-to-date. Perhaps we can help you learn more about your devices.

NewPCWindows XP now more vulnerable to internet attacks - what you should do if you still have XP
On April 8 Microsoft ended support of Windows XP which was the operating system that ran on the majority of personal computers for 13 years. Since Windows XP was released in 2001, Microsoft released and continues to support Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Now that Windows XP is no longer supported, Microsoft will no longer release monthly critical security updates that patch the operating system to help prevent hackers from getting into the computer if connected to the internet.

Virus and malware authors have reportedly been working on infections that target vulnerabilities in Windows XP that will no longer be patched.

If you're unsure what version of Windows is on your computer, click here to see if you are affected by the end-of-support for Windows XP.
The average lifespan of computer hardware is about 5 years, so a computer with Windows XP is well past its lifespan. Now is the time to upgrade and get a new computer. Fortunately you won't have to pay as much for a new computer as your old one since prices have come down over the years.

FAQ: Should I get Windows 7, Windows 8, or Mac OS X?

CheapSupportDon't rely upon cheap, inexperienced technical support: "You get what you pay for"

Do you have a friend or neighbor who works with computers in their spare time? Similar to hiring an unlicensed contractor to work on your home, it may be cheap to go with a friend or neighbor.

But, does that person actively keep up-to-date with the computer industry and fix several computers on a daily basis like we do?

Computer Techs has been in business since 2003, and our technicians have over 20 years of computer experience. We are often called to finish repairing what someone else didn't fix correctly.

The next time you need tech support give us a call. You can count on Computer Techs to get the job done quickly and correctly, and we'll be available the next time you need service.
