Viruses targeting Windows XP will be unleashed in April - how to tell if your computer is vulnerable
If you still have a computer purchased prior to 2008 with the Windows XP operating system, after April 8th Microsoft will no longer be supporting it nor releasing critical security updates for the 13-year-old operating system. Windows XP will continue to work, however it will become increasingly more dangerous to operate if connected to the internet. Virus and malware authors have reportedly been working on infections that target vulnerabilities in Windows XP that will no longer be patched.

The average lifespan of computer hardware is about 5 years, so a computer with Windows XP is well past its lifespan. Now is the time to upgrade and get a new computer. Fortunately you won't have to pay as much for a new computer as your old one since prices have come down over the years.

FAQ: Should I get Windows 7, Windows 8, or Mac OS X?

AVG AntiVirus releases program updates from time-to-time, and you will likely see pop-ups similar to those pictured in the lower-right corner of your screen when an update is available. Whenever there's an update that requires your interaction, they will try to entice you into upgrading to a for-pay version of AVG or make other unwanted changes. But if you follow the simple instructions below, you can continue with the free protection that is recommended for most home computer users at no charge.

Do you have a friend or neighbor who works with computers in their spare time? Similar to hiring an unlicensed contractor to work on your home, it may be cheap to go with a friend or neighbor.

But, does that person actively keep up-to-date with the computer industry and fix several computers on a daily basis like we do?
