MAIN
STREET
UPDATE
A great downtown doesn't happen by accident!
Let's work together to make Downtown Newton something we all can be proud of!

Happy New Year from the Newton Main Street Team!
Here's a quick Main Street Update!

When will we Know if we are Accepted?
On January 16th our Newton Main Street Committee will make a presentation before a 15 member Main Street Iowa Board as to why Newton is 100% ready to work together and utilize the Main Street Program and approach to Downtown Revitalization. We will be notified of their decision in early February 2014.
Hawkeye
FILL THAT BUS!
On January 16th our Main Street Team will be giving a presentation at the Iowa Economic Development Authority in Des Moines.  Hawkeye Stages is donating a bus so we can all get there in style!  We will be leaving at 8:00 AM and will be back in Newton at 11:30 AM. (detailed schedule below)

We still have room on the bus for more Main Street enthusiasts to join us.  NOTE: You may have to stand during the 30 min presentation due to space limitations!  We'll do our best.  To reserve your seat, email us at info@experiencenewton.com or call (641) 792-5545

Main Street Presentation Schedule

      300 E 17th Street in Newton (near Hy-Vee)

Leave on the bus at 8:00 AM Sharp

Arrive at the Iowa Economic Dev. Authority by 9:00 AM

IEDA - 200 E Grand Ave. in Des Moines

Can you still Pledge?
Yes, you can still pledge to Main Street!  The goal we set was the minimum we need to have our application accepted.  The more pledges we have, the more we can accomplish. Current pledges are anywhere from $25 per year to $5000 per year.  Large or small, every pledge helps and shows that Newton is ready to work together. We'll give a Pledge Update to the Iowa Main Street Board on January 16th when we make a presentation to them.

Main Street Questions?
Do you have questions about the Main Street Program?  Are you confused about what it will really mean for Newton?  We understand completely.  Watch for opportunities later in January 2014 to learn more.

Signed, Sealed and Delivered!

We delivered our Main Street Application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority Office in Des Moines on Thursday afternoon (one day early!).  To appreciate the extensive detail of the application, we had to turn it in using a 2 inch 3 Ring binder! This picture shows our Chamber Director Darrell Sarmento and Newton Planning & Zoning Director Erin Chambers turning in the application to Darlene Strachan with the Main Street Program.  Below are a couple pics of our Main Street Team preparing the application.  Click on each pic for more.

Our Chamber radio show airs every Friday morning at 8:40 AM on KCOB 1280 AM.  You can also link to the archives to hear the show anytime!  We'll keep this link on our Chamber E-blasts for your convenience.  A new show will be posted every Friday.  If you are interested in sponsoring the show, contact the radio station at (641) 792-5262.  Sponsors will have the opportunity to be interviewed on one of the shows.  Special thanks to KCOB and the staff at GoodRadio.TV for being a great community partner and taking the lead to launch this project.
LINKS to Business Blogs & Resources
This list changes now and then but these are great resources for anyone running a business or organization, small or large, for profit or not-for-priofit.

Co-author of "The Go-Giver", one of our recommended books.  It's all about doing business with those you know, like and trust.  If you are in sales or want to understand the power of networking, this is a great blog.

If you want to be remarkable, Seth will help you get started.  We recommended his book "The Big Moo" but he has much more to say.  Great for marketing ideas too.

Facebook? Twitter?  You'll find resources, links and articles for all of the all the latest tips and trends in social media.

Why do many small businesses fail?  Michael Gerber wrote a book called the E-Myth (The Entrepreneaur Myth - Voted #1 business book by Inc. 500 CEOs.) to examine that fact, and he's been coaching hundreds ever since.
