NJDOT announces bike lanes for Rt 35 rebuild

New swimsuit --- $75
Beach rental at the shore --- $2000
Bike lanes as far as you can see --- priceless

Complete Streets
The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced last week plans to include bicycle accommodations along 10 of the 12.5 miles of Rt 35 as part of their Complete Streets implementation in this road rebuild. Seven of the eight towns along this Hurricane Sandy-ravaged corridor will have either bike lanes or sharrows, or have diversions to local roads, when the project is completed in summer 2015. Bike accommodations will extend from Mantoloking to Island Beach State Park; Bay Head has not yet agreed to having bicycling infrastructure included on Rt 35 through their town.

NJBWC applauds the NJDOT for fully implementing the state's Complete Streets policy. These features will provide the opportunity for enhanced economic recovery in an area desperate to stabilize after Hurricane Sandy.

The coalition along with Tri-State Transportation Campaign and Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia began advocating for bike lanes in March 2013. Designs introduced by NJDOT at that time and then later in summer 2013 showed no bicycle accommodations. In addition to meeting with local advocates and townships, the three organizations sent a letter to Gov. Christie, making the economic case for bike lanes. NJBWC also launched a call to action where over 250 of you sent letters to NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson, demanding that bicycle accommodations be included in the rebuild. Thank you very much for your support!

If you live or vacation in Bay Head, please contact NJBWC at [email protected]. We may need your support as we work to bring bike accommodations there.

Support NJBWC and World Bicycle Relief!

Your contributions help make the advocacy efforts of NJBWC successful. Together, let's make a donation to World Bicycle Relief. A contribution of 10% of every new and renewed membership and every donation to NJBWC will be made directly to World Bicycle Relief between now and May 15.

If you were at the recent 2014 NJ Bike & Walk Summit, you will

remember the compelling and joyous presentation by FK Day, President of WBR and Co-founder of SRAM, as he described how the specially designed Buffalo Bicycle can change lives in Zambia and other developing countries.

Karen Jenkins, NJBWC Board Chair and I are going to Zambia from May 15 to 25 to visit World Bicycle Relief. We expect to help the staff deliver Buffalo Bicycles to school children, healthcare workers, and small businesses. We have checked our passports, purchased our plane tickets, and will soon receive our immunizations. You can be part of our journey and make it possible for more Zambians to have a Buffalo Bicycle by joining or renewing your membership in NJBWC or making a donation.

Whether you join or renew at the bronze membership level of $35 or higher, become a Lifetime Member or make a donation to NJBWC, 10% of all funds raised between now and May 15 will go directly to World Bicycle Relief. Karen and I will also send you a postcard from Zambia!

When you join NJBWC at the $100 level or higheryou will also receive
an autographed copy of Life is a Wheel, a new book by Bruce Weber. Bruce, a NY Times Reporter, was at the 2013 NJ Bike & Walk Summit and gave a presentation about his two epic bicycle rides across the United States.

For $1,000, you can become a Lifetime Member of NJBWC and will receive a NJBWC jersey in addition to an autographed copy of Life is a Wheel.

When you purchase a NJBWC jersey, 10% of the purchase price of $70 will be donated to World Bicycle Relief.

Remember, everyone who joins or renews their membership, makes a donation to NJBWC, or purchases a jersey will contribute directly to WBR and receive a postcard sent from Zambia. So don't wait! Karen and I need your address before we depart for Zambia on May 15 so we can send you a post card!

Together, let's make a contribution to World Bicycle Relief!
