"Principal For A Day"
Perry Roberts, Executive Director of Institutional Development at Gwinnett Technical College

Mr. Perry Roberts, from Gwinnett Tech, was our Principal for the Day on Monday, Nov. 17th. This opportunity is offered to people in the business community through the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and Gwinnett County Public Schools. Mr. Roberts had the opportunity to learn about classroom instruction, budgets, cafeteria policies and procedures, and eCLASS. He had the opportunity to eat lunch with some of our 5th grade peer leaders, our counselor, and our GCPS Teacher of the Year. Mr. Roberts was amazed at all of the things that go into making sure a school runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis. Thank you to the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and GCPS for providing this opportunity.

City of Snellville Celebrates Gwinnett Teacher of the Year

On Monday, November 17, 2014, Gwinnett Teacher of the Year, Dr. Sharon Smith, was surprised with a Proclamation from the City of Snellville. Councilperson, Barbara A. Bender, hand-delivered the Proclamation to Dr. Smith in her classroom. Mrs. Bender explained the role of city government to Dr. Smith's students and answered their well thought out questions. The students read some of the qualifications for Teacher of the Year including:

  • An exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled teacher.
  • A teacher who inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn.
  • A teacher who has the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues.
  • A teacher who is poised and articulate and possesses much energy.

All agreed that Dr. Smith exemplifies these qualities. Mrs. Bender then read the Proclamation aloud to those assembled. Also in attendance were Cheri Carter, along with Principal For A Day, Perry Roberts, Executive Director of Institutional Development at Gwinnett Technical College.

Following the presentation, Mrs. Carter invited Mrs. Bender to visit the fourth grade classroom of Jeane Sammons. There, Mrs. Bender, President of the Snellville Entrepreneur Council, learned about curriculum used to prepare children for their bright futures. The students are learning how to choose prospective jobs, what to wear on an interview, and how to perform and keep a job. The students enthusiastically shared with Mrs. Bender the interview process and the varied positions they hold, including working with custodians and escorting students from the bus to their classrooms. With the help of students from Brookwood High School's Entrepreneur class, the fourth grade will soon be operating a school store called The Colt Caboodle.

"Student Principal For A Day"
Morgan Mulkey, Brookwood Schools Foundation Bid Winner!

Morgan Mulkey was the Student Principal for the Day on Tuesday, Nov. 18th. Morgan is a third grade student in Mrs. Gibson's class. He won this opportunity through the Brookwood Schools Foundation. The Brookwood Schools Foundation gives parents an opportunity to bid on different items offered by the cluster schools as a fundraiser for the foundation. As the Principal, Mr. Mulkey had some requests for students and teachers. They included: no homework for students on Tuesday, teachers to switch classes for the day and teach a different grade level, students to have ten minutes of extra recess, ice cream for teachers, and to conduct a fire drill. Mr. Mulkey and Mrs. Carter visited every classroom that day, and he spoke with the students and encouraged them to do a good job with their "switched" teacher. It was a great day at Brookwood ES. Thank you, Mr. Mulkey, for being an outstanding Principal for the Day.
