Message from Mrs. Carter
It has been a great week at Brookwood Elementary! Our teachers, support staff, and students have worked hard to keep the focus on teaching and learning. Gwinnett County Public Schools and the school resource officers have supported us this week as we took extra precautions due to the circumstances at Brookwood High School. Thank you for putting your trust in us to provide a safe learning environment for everyone. Your support is greatly appreciated. Enjoy your weekend with your family.

Broad Prize Celebration

Brookwood Elementary celebrated Gwinnett County Public Schools 2014 Broad Prize for Urban Education Friday, Oct. 24th by providing snow cones to students after lunch. This was an opportunity for us to celebrate all of the great things about Gwinnett County Public Schools. GCPS has been a finalist for the prestigious Broad Prize three times (2009, 2010, and 2014) and is now a two-time winner (2010 and 2014). Gwinnett is the only previous winner to be named a finalist in its first year of eligibility. The system's combined Broad Prize winnings total $1.75 million in college scholarships for Gwinnett students.

Thank you to Debbie Taylor, Lilly Corn, Maria Matasic, and all of the BES PTA volunteers for helping with the snow cones.

Annual AKS Review
Annual AKS review runs
October 16-31
The annual review of the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum begins October 16. Through the review process, staff, parents, and community members can give feedback on new AKS (Academic Knowledge and Skills) standards developed to align with the state's Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) as well as AKS for new courses. This online review is addressing AKS for a handful of high school mathematics and science courses, 10 fine arts courses, 60 PE and health courses, and nearly 100 career and technical education courses. Input on these new courses will be given via an online survey. In addition, if there is an AKS you would like to see added, deleted, or revised, please complete the AKS Review Form. This form is available on the Communications Database and will be posted online Oct. 20. Please submit your AKS Review Form via courier to the Office of Curriculum Development at the Instructional Support Center or email it to:
AKS_Review@gwinnett.k12.ga.us by Oct. 31. Curriculum directors will review suggestions and provide comments. On November 18, the GEMS Oversight Committee will review the suggestions and curriculum director comments before making recommendations to the Superintendent for adoption by the Gwinnett County Board of Education. Following adoption, feedback will be provided to staff members who made suggestions.
The surveys are live and can be accessed using the following: AKS Online Surveys
Parent Survey - Parent Portal

Parent Survey: All parents should take the brief, confidential computer survey, available in English or Spanish. Parents should complete only one survey before closing date December 12, 2014.

The survey is available through the GCPS Parent Portal, at home, or on any Internet-connected computer. If you have not yet signed up for the Parent Portal, go to the GCPS website, www.gwinnett.k12.ga.uand click on the Parent Portal tab for more information.
