New Specials Schedule Begins October 6th

Parents, We are over enrollment at BES. We currently have 1,122 students and we were projected 1,052 students. So we earned some additional points to help staff the school. As you know, we added a 5th grade class a few weeks ago. In addition, we will be adding a technology special to grades K-2. This means that students in grades K-2 will now be on a 7-day rotation instead of a 6-day rotation with the added special. The PTA handbook calendar will no longer be correct for the day of the rotation for K-2, but the school web site calendar will be correct. We are excited to be able to add this technology opportunity to students in grades K-2.

Whipping Childhood Cancer!

Brookwood Elementary Students Pie Their Teachers To Support Cancer Research!

Last week students at Brookwood Elementary donated $1 to have their name placed in a lottery drawing for the chance to pie a teacher or principal, Mrs. Carter. The event raised money for the Amanda Riley Foundation, named in memory of a Brookwood High student who lost her battle with cancer in 2010. Brookwood Elementary's "pie a teacher" event raised $1,691.72 in a week-long fundraiser toward the foundation. The teachers who organized the event reminded students that Amanda attended BES just like they did, and played on the same playground.

Amanda's mother, Barbara, attended the event and said it was wonderful and amazing, but the most important part of it was raising awareness for childhood cancer research. Forty-six kids daily are diagnosed, and seven kids daily lose their fight against cancer. Mrs. Carter was especially emotional about the event because she was Amanda Riley's first-grade teacher. "I'm just amazed at how much they have given, and it's supporting the fight against childhood cancer. They really made the connection, it wasn't just somebody getting a pie in the face," Mrs. Carter said. "It would make (Amanda) smile. It would make her very proud, and very excited."

39 teachers stepped up to the plate to be pied by the students. It was a great fundraising event and a lot of fun for the students. We couldn't be more proud of our students!
