Cultural Arts & STEM
The fourth graders were entertained and educated by the First Contact cultural arts program sponsored by PTA. Some students were chosen to participate and become part of the play. We had a great time! Thank you PTA!

Brad Quinlin came to speak to our fifth graders about the Atlanta Campaign of the Civil War. Thank you PTA for another terrific Cultural Arts program.
Mr. Phillip Price, a Neuroscience Grad Student from Emory University, came to visit our 5th graders. As a STEM professional, he shared his knowledge of plant and animal cells through an interactive power point presentation. The students had the opportunity to create an onion skin slide, cheek slide, and a small plant slide. They were amazed at the sights of the cells through the high powered camera ready microscope!

Registering to vote is an important first step in becoming an active citizen in our state and country. There is another innovation offered from the Office of the Secretary of State to help Georgians get registered to vote. Using the new Online Voter Registration System (OLVR), anyone with a valid Georgia driver's license can register to vote online at https://registertovote.sos.ga.gov/GAOLVR/beginRegistration.do.

Students can use this system at the age of 17 1/2 years. Georgians can also use the new My Voter Page mobile app for their phone or tablet. It will give you individualized sample ballots, lists of elected officials, the ability to track your absentee ballot and much more. Simple search for "GA Votes" on the Android or Apple app stores and downloads the app for free.

Brookwood Elementary Gifted Student Of The Year!

Congratulations to KELLYN BRISENDINE our Brookwood Gifted Student of the Year for 2013-2014!

Kellyn will be invited to attend a special ceremony in May, hosted by the Gwinnett Association of Gifted Educators.

About her four-year journey through the FOCUS program at Brookwood, Kellyn says she has learned four important life lessons:

  1.  Learning is super fun!

  2.  The adventure of learning never ends.

  3.  There is no limit to what can be achieved if you try.

  4.  All challenges can be tackled, large or small!

In her own words, Kellyn reflects, "My FOCUS teachers showed me the difference it makes to go beyond the basics. Challenging me to learn new concepts, my FOCUS teachers always believe that I could do it!  From projects to plays, from campfire stories  to advanced work, my FOCUS explorations have provided many winding pathways of learning for me.  There are no limits to what I can achieve if I try.  Best of all, through FOCUS, I have gained confidence in myself.  The guidance given by my FOCUS teachers will provide a strong foundation for a bright future.  These valuable lessons will guide me throughout my life." WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU, KELLYN!  Congratulations!
