 Writing Can Make Changes Happen!

Safeer Mathani is a fourth grade student in Ms. Wilkin's class at Brookwood Elementary. When he noticed cigarette pieces on the playground at our school, he decided to write a letter to his principal, Mrs. Head, to express his concern that people were smoking on school grounds. He knew that was against the rules and that we are a smoke free environment.

In his letter, Safeer gave suggestions for ways to fence in the back area of the school and secure it with locks. He drew and labeled diagrams to show his idea.

Even though Mrs. Head was unable to fence in the playground and lock it, she agreed with Safeer that people should not be smoking on our campus. So, she talked with Safeer about the idea of putting up some signs reminding people that they should not smoke on school grounds. Gwinnett County Public Schools furnished and installed the signs.

Thanks to Safeer and his willingness to write that letter, our school should again be smoke free and our playground will be cleaner. Thank you, Safeer, for using your writing skills to make a difference and for caring about your school and our environment! We are very proud of you!

Reading Everywhere!

Reading Takes You Everywhere!

In order to support our school wide reading initiative we want to create a bulletin board showcasing our students reading outside of school. Please take a picture of your child reading some place unusual. Maybe reading at a museum, in front of the Statue of Liberty, reading at a Braves game, etc. Send the picture to Mrs. Burnett:(Kris_Burnett@gwinnett.k12.ga.us ) and she will enter your child's name into a drawing to win a book! This will be an ongoing opportunity.

Hat Trick for Reading

Each year we offer a wonderful opportunity to win a ticket to a Gwinnett Gladiators game. Simply fill out the attached bookmark with your child's name and record three book titles that you have read with your child and bring it back to school. It's that easy!
