  Our New Reading Lounge!

Bobbie Williams and Sarah Mallow received a grant from the Brookwood Schools Foundation to open our Reading Lounge. The goal is to provide a comfortable, inviting space for students to read, to be read to and simply enjoy books! The Reading Lounge is furnished with colorful beanbags, rugs, and chairs. The grant also provided some E-readers that students can use. The room is filled with book ideas and quotes to inspire reading and thinking! Thank you to those of you who have made contributions to the Brookwood Schools Foundation! Their generous grants provide additional resources for our students and teachers! If you would like to donate to the Foundation you can go to their website or you can bring your donation to us.

The Brookwood Elementary PTA Homecoming Float was "VIBE" - RANT!

The Brookwood Elementary School Homecoming Float was definitely "VIBE"-RANT at the Brookwood High School Homecoming Parade last Friday.  Thank you to the BES PTA for sponsoring the float!  The Homecoming theme this year was "VIBE- a night of lights, lasers and music".  BES's creativity and hard work shined as parents and students collaborated to construct, paper mache and paint.  The family and children of the PTA board members and committee chairs decorated the float.  These students were invited to ride on the float to represent BES and throw out candy to the spectators.  The main attraction of the 20ft float was a large paper-mache Disco Ball!  There was a "dance" floor and the sides of the float were adorned with glitter-painted musical notes.  The banner read, "Brookwood Elementary Disco Colts are "VIBE-RANT"!  The students' BES pride illuminated as they wore neon colors and glow necklaces.  When the float returned to BES, our student helpers were surprised to find out that the Disco Ball was actually a HUGE pinata full of candy rewards for their efforts!  Thank you to everyone that participated to make our float the BESt!!!

The BES PTA would like to specially thank the following for their time and efforts!
Dennis Hopf for constructing the entire float infrastructure, and his father, Mr. Denny Hopf, for crafting our musical notes!
Ben Langford for obtaining the trailer and pulling the float in the parade
Decorations:  Cindy Ahmed, Christie Kearney and Stephanie Langford
Float Chaperones: Kendra Corrona, Lisa Frankenberger, Nikki Green, Stephanie Langford and Sherrie Mikell

Get Out And VOTE On November 6!
voteWith less than a month until the Nov. 6 election, it is important for all of us to be educated voters. One of the ballot items, Amendment 1(HR 1162) has received much attention as it could have significant implications for the state's public schools. Everyone with a stake in the success of Georgia's public schools should become well-informed about the constitutional amendment before the November election. Below are a few answers to questions you may have on this issue. Additional information on the amendment, along with information about voting, is available on the district's website. As always, I encourage you to vote on Nov. 6. It is not just a right or a privilege, but our responsibility as Americans.

~ CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks

What is Amendment 1?

Commonly called the "charter school amendment" Amendment 1 is the result of the Georgia General Assembly's passage of House Resolution 1162. If approved by voters, Amendment 1 would give a state-appointed commission the power to authorize and fund state-run charter schools.

How does the amendment read on the ballot?

The ballot includes both a preamble and the actual question. They read as follows:

Preamble:"Provides for improving student achievement and parental involvement through more public charter school options (HR 1162)"

Question: "Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to allow state or local approval of public charter schools upon the request of local communities?" Yes or No

What would a 'Yes' vote for Amendment 1 mean?

The amendment, if passed, would allow the Georgia Charter Schools Commission, declared unconstitutional by the Georgia Supreme Court in May of 2011, to be re-established. The seven-member, appointed commission would be authorized to approve charter schools that have not been approved by local boards of education.

What would a 'No' vote for Amendment 1 mean?

If the amendment doesn't pass, the current system remains in place. Locally elected school boards will retain the power to authorize charter schools, and the State Board of Education will continue to have the authority to hear appeals of charters that local boards have denied, and approve those the State Board believes should be established. Charters approved by the districts will continue to receive both state and local funds, and state charter schools will receive state funds only, according to the current law.

Where can additional information about Amendment 1 be found?

In addition to the GCPS website, the following websites are a good source of information from those who support as well as those who oppose the amendment: www.bettergaschools.org and www.votesmartgeorgia.com
