PiezoFlush in 350ml size on sale at IJM!
Greetings!

One week from today, our BLACK FRIDAY sale occurs. Everything at InkjetMall will be on sale with discounts from 10% - 45%. If you just bought your color ink set from InkjetMall, this will be an excellent opportunity to stock up on refills. If you haven't yet bought your color system, we will entice you with incredible savings!

We've been so busy this Summer and Fall. I'm President at both InkjetMall and Cone Editions Press. At Cone Editions Press, we were delighted to have Zana Briski return for another go at a long term project in which we have been collaborating. I produced a special ink set for Andrea Zini's magnificent print installation in Firenze, Italy. The project was very reminiscent of the work I did for the Ashes and Snow projects. We produced special sizes of giant hand made papers and printed his wildlife photography. And Altoon Sultan returned to make a new digital montage project using our huge overhead scanner. I first worked with Altoon on an IRIS print project in the mid 1990s. You can get a glimpse of these project on the Cone Editions facebook page.

And Cathy Cone and I returned to "school" by taking a workshop at the Maine Media Workshops. Our teacher, Keith Carter, certainly shook up some of my foundations. It was am amazing workshop at an amazing school. You should check out Maine Media Workshops. So, I ended up teaching a workshop myself in Santa Fe and that will be the subject of another newsletter. Cathy and I have decided to start up the Cone Editions Workshops again next Summer here in Vermont. Workshops are so energizing. We first began delivering ours in 1992. We've been on too long a hiatus since 2008.

Finally, we have worked all Summer on getting ready to introduce new bottles for our inks. It will greatly simplify re-ordering. But, our intentions were to produce a bottle that is easily recyclable. The Nalgene brand bottles which we have used for years are made of a plastic that is easily recycled. But, these bottles do not have a recycle symbol moulded into the bottle. Many of our customers complained that the bottles were not "legal" for recycle centers. We've now have a unique square bottle with both a recycle symbol and the raised letter logo of Vermont PhotoInkjet along its side - so accept no imitations!

The inks sold at InkjetMall are not repackaged inks. Our formulations are exclusive and based upon my work as both a printmaker and an ink guy. I first began making inks for IRIS Graphics printers in the early 1990s. I've designed our Piezography® inks as well as our ConeColor® inks - both quite unique in the world. They are not sold by any other company in the USA. I do private label the formulas to a few select distributors in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. If you would like to learn a bit more about the inks themselves visit Vermont PhotoInkjet's website. You can get a good idea of the range we offer.

Best Regards,
Jon Cone

Piezography users take note if using OS X 10.5 or higher!
The Mac OS X system has been causing us quite a bit of problems with customers who we have been producing custom Piezograhy K7 profiling. These late generation Mac OS X systems have been introducing some strange effects into the mix. Dana Ceccarelli worked tirelessly this Summer to document each and every permeation of these operating systems. You can read about that here.

The bottom line is that Apple does not allow its customers to print without selecting some form of color management (an ICC profile). When it detects an image being printed without an ICC profile, the Mac OS X takes over, applies a conversion to the image and does this all behind the scenes. The most difficult part of this is that each successive generation of Mac OS X after 10.4 does it differently. You would think that they came up with a plan to stick with.

While many of us were anticipating support for 16 bit displays (such as the Eizo CG series), Apple seems instead to be focused on a consumer market, taking control once and for all of the File / Print menu so that consumers can print blindly. Professionals (again) are simply being left behind. Photoshop is NOT the blame on this. And while Adobe has released a Print Utility, the newest Apple OS has found a way to interfere even with that. You would think that Apple and Adobe might be a little more collaborative.

So what's the big deal? Piezography K7 curves can produce tens of thousands of gray levels when used with the Piezography K7 inks. These gray levels are linearized into a very smooth tonal gradation from dMin to dMax. You just do not want Apple messing with that. So if you are the type of photographer who wishes to have custom K7 curves produced for your own system, or for custom papers, you need to print the K7 256 gray patch targets without any color management. Apple has been preventing that. For regular K7 printing, we have been advising different printing instructions since 10.4.

To the Rescue! Roy Harrington released a MUST HAVE tool for all Mac users on OS X 10.5 and higher. The QTR rint Tool is a stand alone application that is used as a layout manager (compose multiple images) and sends the layout to QuadTone RIP. You can read about that here and download the trial version.

Print Tool allows you to print without any interference from the Mac OS. By selecting "No Color Management" from the Print Tool menu - no color management is applied. Your images are passed to QuadTone RIP where you select the correct Piezography K7 media profile. And life is good again...on the Apple platform.
