City of Edgerton Begins project to improve Waverly Road

EDGERTON, Kan. - (December 10, 2014) The City of Edgerton will begin a project to design and construct improvements to Waverly Road near Logistics Park Kansas City (LPKC) to support truck traffic for non-standard, heavy loads. The project will improve nearly three miles of Waverly Road, making it a heavy-haul corridor and a new connection between US-56 and 199th Street. The project will also construct a grade separation at the BNSF intermodal tracks to ensure Waverly Road traffic can operate without delays due to train traffic. Within the next 30 days, the City will begin to identify a design-build team to deliver a completed project in 2016.

The infrastructure enhancements will provide access to property on Waverly Road south of 191st Street and the direct-rail served property north of 183rd Street, allowing 3.4 million additional square feet of direct rail space, in addition to the 11 million square feet of warehouse space at LPKC by NorthPoint Development. In conjunction with the project, BNSF Railway will construct an industrial lead track to serve the property north of its LPKC Intermodal Facility for rail-served warehouses.

"Expanding the traffic capabilities of Waverly Road is a critical next step in building the infrastructure for our community," said City of Edgerton Mayor Donald Roberts. "Increasing the opportunity for companies to have direct access to the heavy-haul corridor, making more land accessible for development and offering direct-rail served properties will positively impact the ability to attract new development at LPKC."

Funding for Waverly Road and the new BNSF lead track will be provided, per agreement, by KDOT, BNSF and the City.  Up to $30 million has been secured for the Waverly Road improvements with the City repaying 20% of the project costs. The City will dedicate the City utility sales tax revenue generated by tenants of LPKC for that repayment.
