Bee Healthy

Did You Know...?? People tend to consume more calories and spend more money on foods that claim to be "healthier" foods. Buzzwords like
"organic,"
"all-natural," "whole grain" and "veggie"
make a product appear healthy. But if you actually look at the ingredient list, you'll see that there's more to the story.

Food # 1: Reduced fat peanut butter

When food manufactures take out the fat, they have to replace it

with sugar. This means you're trading the healthy fat from peanuts for empty carbs, double the sugar, and a savings only 10 calories. Instead, choose peanut butter that contains NO oils, fillers, or added sugars. JUST peanuts and salt. Spread natural peanut butter on your apple, celery or toast for more of the good fats and protein without fake sweetness.

Food # 2: Frozen Waffles and Pancakes

It is so easy to opt for pre-packeged frozen pancakes or waffles to pop in the
toaster, but if you take a look at the ingredient list, you will see a long list of additives, preservatives and sugar. You can easily make your own
ahead of time and make double batches over the weekend and use them for a quick healthy breakfast.

Food # 3: Egg Beaters
Marketed as a "healthy" substitute for eggs, Egg Beaters is a typical breakfast choice of most Americans seeking to limit cholesterol and saturated fat. The problem is, when you take out the saturated fat and cholesterol from eggs and substitute vegetable oil, nonfat dry milk, additives, and artificial flavors, you eliminate considerably large amount of healthy nutrients such as B vitamins, folic acid, Iron, and essential brain nutrient Choline.

Food #4: Multigrain Bread

Check the ingredient list to make sure 100% whole wheat is the first, and main ingredient-otherwise, you are just getting a few grains mixed into regular white bread. Better yet, forgo the bread and enjoy straight-up barley, brown rice, quinoa, or steel-cut oats.

Healthy Holiday Cookies Food # 5: Gluten-free baked goods

If you aren't diagnosed with celiac disease or a gluten intolerance, keep in mind that gluten-free doesn't necessarily mean healthy-and gluten-free baked goods like bread, cookies, and crackers often are packed with more refined flours, artificial ingredients, and sugar than traditional baked goods. Plus, they can cost up to twice as much as you'd normally spend.

Food #6: Energy or protein bars

These calorie-laden bars are usually stacked at the checkout counter because they depend on impulse buyers who grab them, thinking they are more wholesome than a candy bar. Unfortunately, they can have very high fat and sugar contents and are often as caloric as a regular candy bar. They're also two to three times more expensive than a candy bar. If you need a boost, a vitamin-rich piece of fresh fruit, a yogurt, or a small handful of nuts is more satiating and less expensive.

Fat Free Food #7: Fat - Free Yogurt

This yogurt may be low in fat and calories, but it harbors a whopping 26 grams of sugar-that's more than what you'll find in a Twinkie! The sugar overload will cause an energy crash later, not exactly what most people are looking for in something touted as a healthy breakfast food.

Eat This Instead: Plain Greek yogurt sweetened with a dab of real honey or fresh fruits. The high protein content will keep you feeling full longer, and the fruits and honey are loaded with naturally-occurring antioxidants.

Did You Know that

Low fat foods trick you into overeating? As low-fat and nonfat foods are often less satisfying than their full-fat cousins, you don't get quite the enjoyment from each mouthful. So you take another one, and another - and wind up flooding your body with carbohydrates and calories and throwing your blood sugar out of whack.
