SAWDC awards $3.1 million to serve community

The Spokane Area Workforce Development Council Board recently voted to award $3,132,000 to the Spokane Workforce Consortium to provide employment and training services to job seekers, laid-off workers and youth.

Career Path Services, Washington State Employment Security Department, Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest and NorthEast Washington Educational Service District 101 comprise the consortium, which has been award the Workforce Investment Act funding for 2013-2014.

The group brings years of experience delivering workforce development services to employers and job seekers in Spokane County. Since 2007, the consortium has served nearly 120,000 job seekers in Spokane County.
Grant provides financial education for Next Generation Zone youth

A grant awarded to the Spokane County United Way is allowing the Next Generation Zone to teach financial literacy to 288 youth (ages 16-24) in our community.

The grant from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Foundation provides funding to educate young adults on basic financial principles, help them set and attain goals and increase their financial stability. The objective is to reach individuals from low-income households who are starting their first jobs or paid internships.

A small group from YouthBuild is nearing completion of the 12-hour training. They have been the pilot cohort for the project and a way for Next Generation Zone program specialist Lisa Adnet to test the curriculum.

"You can tell they are really thinking about money now," said Lisa. "It's been very rewarding." She said they are starting to come up with their own strategies for handling their finances, like dividing their checks into thirds or saving a little each week.

"Equalizing the access to the tools that help youth become more financially stable is a great gift. The poverty we have in Spokane is real," said Tara Dowd, community impact associate at Spokane County United Way and coordinator of the grant. "This opportunity for 288 youth to learn about personal finances and create healthy financial habits will lead to a better life for them and for generations to come."

The first class at the Next Generation Zone begins June 20. Each group of 12-15 youth will meet weekly for two hours over six weeks. Youth also receive individual coaching with a financial coach and follow-up for six months after the training. Any interested youth are encouraged to contact the Next Generation Zone at 509.340.7800 to speak with a career coach.

Mark Mattke presents at U.S. Conf. of Mayors

Spokane Area Workforce Development Council CEO Mark Mattke was elected last year as a member of U.S. Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council Board of Directors.

The group is made up of workforce leaders from many different metro areas throughout the U.S. At a meeting last month in Seattle focused on supporting the future workforce, Mattke presented on the SAWDC's successful Inspire Washington initiative, which created an online platform to connect young people to a range of work-based learning activities, including job shadows, internships and more.

"Cities across the country recognize that youth unemployment is at record-high levels, and programs such as Inspire Washington can help provide young people pathways into the labor market," said Mattke.

Several other areas from around the nation expressed interest in learning more about the means to replicate the program, and there has also been growing momentum across Washington state in developing a common platform to connect businesses with young people.

Locally, as an enhancement to the Inspire Washington site, the SAWDC has partnered with Seven2's Tyler Lafferty and Greater Spokane Incorporated to launch a virtual matching tool called Access2Experience. For more information about how businesses and educators can virtually connect using this site, please email us.
