Demand for Behavioral Interviewing Workshop on the Rise

Demand for a workshop focused on behavioral interviewing at WorkSource Spokane is on the rise as employers are gearing up to increase hiring. The three-hour workshop, which is provided at no cost to local employers, is held monthly at WorkSource and can also be delivered on-site at employer facilities.

Behavioral interviewing is a method for conducting interviews based on the premise that past behavior predicts future behavior, and the best way to assess the likelihood of success for a job candidate is to solicit examples of past job performance and evaluate these examples in light of the requirements for the job.

The process of behavioral interviewing was first developed about 30 years ago by a number of industrial psychologists, including Paul Green, PhD, upon whose work this workshop is largely based. Since first bringing this workshop to Spokane a couple of years ago, hundreds of hiring managers and supervisors have been trained.

To find out more about attending the workshop or having the training at your company, contact Jack Kaplan, at jkaplan@esd.wa.gov or 509.532.3061.

Transportation and Warehousing Industry Employs more than 7,000 in Spokane Region

An increasingly growing industry in the Spokane region is the transportation and warehousing sector. Spokane is the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis/St. Paul along the northern Great Plains and has traditionally served as a major nexus where three transportation modes - air, rail and road - meet. Key businesses such as the Spokane International Airport and Spokane Business & Industrial Park continue to foster growth in this sector through the development of commercial property and bring in new companies.

Recent decisions by companies such as Caterpillar, Inc. to locate a new 500,000 square foot logistics and distribution center in Spokane and the continued growth of our aviation and related transportation cluster as evidenced by Horizon Airlines' new maintenance hangar at the SIA demonstrate ongoing new investments and job creation for this sector.

With 255 companies in nine sub sectors, more than 7,000 people are employed in this industry at approximately 250 businesses throughout the Spokane Region, including courier and delivery services, general freight trucking, corporate and regional managing offices, and the Spokane International Airport.

The transportation industry offers great family-wage jobs and is a high-growth field. Workers earn $50,000 per year on average, and in-demand occupations include truck drivers; laborers, fright, and material movers; bus drivers; first-line supervisors; and bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists.

Next Generation Zone Youth Tells Her Story

From Jeniffer Black, a participant from the Next Generation Zone:

Brandie and Jeniffer
Next Generation Zone Staff Brandie Batt and Jeniffer Black

When I started getting involved with the Next Generation Zone, I was a high school dropout and didn't have a clue where I was going with my life. Thanks to them, I was able to get my GED and then shortly after that, start my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) classes.

I became employed with an adult family home care site and am now a CNA. This program gave me everything I needed and more - work clothes and the confidence I never really knew I had. The Next Generation Zone helped me get on my feet, discover that I wanted to become a nurse and gave me balance in my life when I needed it most.

I can now say I want to continue my education and move on to bigger and better things. If it wasn't for the Next Generation Zone, I don't know where I would be right now. I am so thankful for Brandie and everyone there for going above and beyond for me. They will never know how much they really did help me.
