Let's celebrate the Class of 2016
On June 3 & 4 nearly 1,500 seniors graduated from Ector County ISD high schools. Included in that group were more than 160 students - about 11% - who were the first in their immediate families to graduate from high school.
Each of the three high schools with graduating seniors held end-of-year ceremonies specifically to honor those first in family graduates, and shine a light on their accomplishment in hopes of inspiring younger students to make sure they get their diploma. "Many parents were not able to finish high school themselves, through no fault of their own. I have seen the pride in their eyes when their child is introduced at these ceremonies." Read more...

School supply lists now available
Are you looking to get a jump on buying school supplies this summer? Those lists are now posted on our school district website. You can follow this link to find your child's list here.
Only the elementary school lists are up right now. If a middle school has a school supply list it will be added when it is ready. High schools do not usually have supply lists; individual teachers will let students know what materials they need during the first week of classes in August.

Odessa HS students shine in national essay contest
Congratulations to OHS students Stefan Garcia, Irma Tinoco, and Jessica Suchil who earned some of the top spots in the national essay contest for Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program tutors. CCVYP, created by the Intercultural Development Research Association, is an internationally-recognized cross-age tutoring program. Students in the program are at risk of dropping out, and they are paired with elementary students as tutors and mentors. The goal of the program is to keep the older kids engaged in school as they become role models for the younger students. And it works.

Stefan, a senior who graduated Saturday night, won first place for high school in the national essay competition, Irma, a junior, won second place, and Jessica, who also just graduated over the weekend, earned an honorable mention. Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program tutors wrote about how the program helped them do better in school and how they had helped their tutees to do better. There were competitions at both the middle school and high school levels in the United States. Winners from each competition are being awarded $200 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place. This link will take you to their essays we think it is definitely worth your time to read them. In Ector County ISD we have had the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program for eight years and it has helped our students stay in school, increase academic performance, improve school attendance and advance to higher education.
