DPS Troopers honored for second time

For the second time this year Odessa Department of Public Safety Troopers have been recognized for their work with Ector County ISD.

At the April 19 school board meeting Trooper Mark Page and Trooper Landon Rabun represented the larger group that serves as mentors to students at Noel Elementary School. That work earned the DPS Troopers recognition in the Stand Up for Texas Public School program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards. The program is designed specifically to honor the businesses and organizations that partner with public schools and make a difference in the lives of our kids. Not only are our DPS Troopers excellent role models but they also give the kids another "safe" adult in which they can confide and receive direction. The students look forward to the visits from their mentors.

Earlier this year the Troopers were named a Gold Level Employer for Education Excellence by the State Board of Education for their work at Noel Elementary and this honor is another that is well-deserved!
Celebrating our Volunteers & Partners!

On April 21 we hosted our annual Volunteers & Partners Awards Luncheon inside Building G of the Ector County Coliseum. This is always a special day as we get to treat our volunteers to lunch and recognize them for their efforts. The pictures are of the Partner of the Year - the Odessa Chamber of Commerce - and a group shot of all of our honorees. Those individuals are listed below.

This year our volunteer program is some 600 strong, and these selfless individuals have given nearly 60,000 hours to our schools so far this year. We also have more than 90 Partners in Education whose donations are helping fuel the success of our students. To get involved with ECISD's Volunteers & Partners program call 456-9012.

College & career ready through CTE

When you think of state competitions your mind probably goes straight to athletics contests. Perhaps even fine arts. But have you considered the number of our students who are excelling to that level in their class work?

These students made their mark at the State Competition for Business Professionals of America recently, and they are but a small sampling of our CTE (that's Career and Technical Education) students who are excelling in contests like Broadcast Journalism, Digital Publishing, Welding, Culinary Arts, Floriculture and much, much more! ECISD had nearly 100 CTE kids qualify for state-level contests this year and we invite you to read about them
at this link on our website.
Eagle Scout service!

Life Scout Patrick Lucas, a 15-year old sophomore at Permian High School, was looking for a project for his last requirement for the rank of Eagle Scout. Downing Elementary needed flags. The two causes collided, and both Patrick and the school won in a big way. Patrick not only donated presentation flags to the school, but also ensured that each classroom has both a U.S. and a Texas flag.

Patrick is pictured with Jewell Downing, Mr. Downing's widow, and sons John Downing & Edward Downing Jr. Patrick raised $1,500, led a workday to assemble and install the flags, and put together an exhibit for the school's foyer honoring the school's namesake, Edward K. Downing. The exhibit has pictures documenting Mr. Downing's military service and career, flags flown over the Texas and U.S. Capitols in honor of the school, and a memorial bench painted green and gold - the school colors of Blackshear Junior-Senior High School where Mr. Downing served as principal. What an effort!
Doggone Reading Day

The dog days of summer are ahead of us but the Doggone Reading Day at Gonzales Elementary School just passed and it was a hit!

On that day kids got the chance to read with some canine companions. Most of the dogs were rescues, and many students brought cans or bags of food to donate to Odessa Animal Control or Humane Society of Odessa. A good book is a little more enjoyable with a good friend, and for some struggling readers it allows them to relax and gain confidence by reading with the pooches. Fun stuff!
