#WhyAVID

For the ninth year in a row teachers, students, and parents packed the house for the annual AVID Celebration. This year's theme was #WhyAVID. With the success the AVID program has seen - 175 high school seniors this year and ALL have been accepted into college - why not?

Summer camp in Alaska

It is the trip of a lifetime for Permian High School's Jaime Garza, Jr. A group of teachers and administrators about 20-strong surprised him during his Pre-AP Physics class on Tuesday, announcing he had been chosen to take part in the Argonaut program led by JASON Learning. It means Jaime will travel to a research institute in Alaska in August, and will be part of an intensive, hands-on research experience with resident and visiting scientists. Specifically, he will be part of group studying sea otters.

To be considered, Jaime had to submit three essays and a YouTube video application which was then reviewed by representatives from JASON and ECISD. The trip will cover 11 days and he will join students from across the country taking part in this experience. You can read more about the Argonaut program here - https://www.jason.org/argonaut-program.
A huge thank you goes to Chevron which will provide the funding for all travel and expenses related to the Argonaut activities. It is the second year in a row Chevron has supported our school district in this way; last summer the company sent one student and two teachers to the JASON Learning marine research institute in the Bahamas.
Playoff bound!

Both of our high school softball teams are in the playoffs, having tied for second place in the district!

Odessa High School takes on Weatherford in a best 2 out of 3 series to be played at Abilene Christian University. Game 1 is at 5:00 Friday, Game 2 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, and Game 3 will be played 30 minutes after Game 2 if it is necessary.

Permian High School faces Arlington Martin at Hawley High School, also a best 2 out of 3 series. In this one, Game 1 is at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Game 2 is at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, and Game 3 is at noon on Saturday if it is necessary.

Good luck to the Lady Bronchos and the Lady Panthers!
Trained to succeed

Last week five student athletic trainers from Odessa High School signed scholarships to continue as athletic trainers at Odessa College. It is a great opportunity as they will go into various medical fields while doing athletic training. These students have been in the OHS program for two or more years working 2 to 3 sports each year. It is demanding job and requires a great work ethic, time management, and determination to keep up their grades.

From left to right they are Savannah Falcon, Samantha Miramontes, Ezequiel Dominguez, Anahi Ramirez and Brianna Valles. Congratulations to all of them, their families, and their teachers!

We don't know how they do it but they do it each year. The staff, students, and parents from Lamar Early Education Center are once again the top school fundraiser for the March of Dimes - raising a whopping $23,270 this year! This picture is from the school's big announcement of this year's total.

Lamar EEC is a Pre-K only campus but supporting the March of Dimes is a part of the culture. The school annually tops the $20,000 mark. Amazing!
