Learn about Pre-K - tomorrow

Research shows early education is very valuable for children! In Pre-kindergarten kids read & write daily, they develop language skills, discover math concepts, and begin to learn self-discipline.

The Pre-K Round Up is specifically for parents to learn more about what Pre-K has to offer - visit Carver Early Education Center or Lamar Early Education Center to tour the school, meet teachers, and ask questions.
Innovative programs to train teachers

A shortage of teachers is one of the biggest issues facing ECISD, and district officials are taking aggressive steps to recruit and retain highly qualified people. Two new training programs are in the works - one is a collaboration with the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, the other is an effort involving Texas Tech University and Odessa College. Read more about what ECISD is doing to fill teacher vacancies in the superintendent's blog, Crowe's Chronicles

More of our students are college bound!

In the past week six more of our ECISD kids signed college offers. On April 6 Odessa High School goalkeeper Kayle Thomason signed a letter of intent to continue her soccer and her education at Richland College. She was the Lady Bronchos keeper for the past two years and is going one of the top junior college programs in the nation. Richland won national championships in 2004, 2006, and 2009.

On April 12, four athletic trainers from Permian High School signed scholarship offers to be trainers for Odessa College and Midland College. These community colleges have some of the top athletic programs in the country and can have anywhere from 10-15 student trainers, depending on the year. Often these scholarships cover all tuition and fees.

G/T Chess for Champions sets record for participation

The annual Chess for Champions tournament sponsored by the ECISD Advanced Academics Department saw a record number of students register this year - more than 500 - and the group filled the gym at UTPB on April 2.

Chess is such a great way to exercise your brain! It is shown to increase IQ and problem-solving skills, as well as spark creativity. Each year, students in the Scholars in Progress gifted/talented program are invited to play in this tournament.

Dealing with lice

Last week a number of questions arose concerning students with lice and how the school district notifies parents. Because health agencies do not consider lice a health threat - they are not dangerous and they do not spread diseases - it is no longer considered a reason to keep a student out of school. The Texas Department of Health, American Academy of Pediatrics, Center for Disease Control, and National Association of School Nurses have all supported this position. Organizations feel that mass notifications serve to single out and embarrass a student confirmed with lice. When cases are discovered, ECISD school nurses contact the student's parent directly and offer advice and guidance on how to deal with the situation. The school district has the same information posted on its website for all to access at any time: http://www.ectorcountyisd.org/page/483. This link takes you to another article with information on the subject -- https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/pages/AAP-Updates-Treatments-for-Head-Lice.aspx

In all cases parents are encouraged to talk to their child's principal or the school nurse whenever they have questions about their own child's health.
