Ready to take on the world!

The banner says it all; the Robotics team from George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa is off to battle the world in a competition later this month in St. Louis.

The school celebrated with a special assembly Tuesday afternoon. Club sponsor Richard Lindner called this a huge accomplishment for their relatively young robotics program of only 14 students, especially compared to other programs who average 40-50 kids. NTO competes in a medieval themed game called "Stronghold" and when the challenge type was announced in January the team chose to focus its robot on speed, defense and fitting into tight places. All teams are given six weeks to build their robot for tasks like catching, breaching obstacles and bonuses like climbing. ECISD Partner SM Energy, which donated $10,000 to NTO Robotics last year, was on hand to celebrate this success. Since the entrance fee is $5,000 Mr. Lindner said SM Energy's support was crucial to the team's success!

The FIRST World Championship is April 27-30 and will pit Bush NTO against more than 800 other teams. FIRST stands for For Inspiration & Recognition of Science and Technology and was founded in 1989 to motivate students to pursue education and careers in these fields.

Heroes honored with bronze sculptures

These are the bronze sculptures that are displayed near the main office of Wilson & Young Medal of Honor Middle School. The busts, created by sculptor Jim DeMoss, an Odessan himself, are of Alfred Mac Wilson and Marvin Rex Young who lost their lives in Vietnam and were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

You can read more about this emotional ceremony here and more about Wilson and Young at this link
Why Pre-K?

Research shows early education is very valuable for children! In Pre-kindergarten kids read & write daily, they develop language skills, discover math concepts, and begin to learn self-discipline.

The Pre-K Round Up is specifically for parents to learn more about what Pre-K has to offer - visit Carver Early Education Center or Lamar Early Education Center to tour the school, meet teachers, and ask questions.
