School board extends superintendent's contract

At their meeting on March 29 the Ector County ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to extend the contract of Superintendent of Schools Tom Crowe. The board did not discuss a raise at that time, only the extension.

Mr. Crowe was hired as interim superintendent in August 2013, and then as the full time superintendent on December 24, 2013. His original contract ran through June 30, 2017, but the extension goes through December 31, 2019.

Following the vote school board president Nelson Minyard said the Trustees offered this extension to show the community they are behind Mr. Crowe and support the work he is leading.

World Class Leader in Education

At their March meeting ECISD Trustees honored Brian Castillo, P.E. teacher at Jordan Elementary, as the World Class Leader in Education. He's been a P.E. coach for ten years, and is a 15-year veteran of ECISD.

If you were to watch a PE class at Jordan, you would be amazed to see students work so hard for a teacher. His kids accomplish more in one 45-minute class than most can in an entire week. There is always 100% student engagement in every lesson Coach Castillo presents. He promotes personal responsibility through rewards and consequences while modeling scholarly behavior. He completely immerses himself into his job and his students.

Coach Castillo developed a unique warm up routine that incorporates fitness development, mental challenges and academic classroom components and is now being used in PE classes all over the state. In fact, he uses a lot of academic vocabulary along with math concepts in his P.E. classes. He has a positive attitude which he passes on to the students. He's created an atmosphere where students regardless of fitness level work hard and believe they can do better. To put it succinctly, Jordan students enjoy going to P.E. and have challenged themselves to be "champions." That simple sentence defines why Brian Castillo is this month's World Class Leader in Education!
