Good Friday holiday means school is out

All State honors!

During Spring Break the Odessa High School Mariachi Broncho performed at the State UIL competition in San Antonio and earned a 2 (Excellent) overall. Even more great news: two of the Mariachi Broncho students returned home as "Outstanding Performers" - State Champions - each with a draped gold medal. Those State Champions are pictured, Oscar Lozoya (Vocals on the left) and Christian Rojero (Trumpet). Oscar is also in OHS Guitar and gymnastics, and Christian is on the soccer team. The ensemble received a "Distinguished Performance" plaque! Congratulations!
Soccer playoffs start this week

Two ECISD soccer teams travel to Shotwell Stadium in Abilene tomorrow to begin the high school soccer playoffs. The Odessa High School boys play first, at 11:30 a.m., against Arlington Sam Houston High School. The Bronchos, who finished third in District 3-6A, will be the visiting team.

The second game of the day will feature the Permian Lady Panthers, the second place team from 3-6A, against Arlington High, which finished third in district 4. That game starts at 1:45 p.m. On Monday afternoon the girls shaved head coach Chad Peterson's beard - their reward for finishing the second with eight straight wins!

Good luck to our student-athletes and coaches!
D-E-T-E-R-M-I-N-E-D to see the Bee continue

The word "vernacular" sent Reagan Elementary student Gabriel Haley to the Washington D.C. for the National Spelling Bee. More precisely, Gabriel spelling "vernacular" correctly sent him on the trip, and alas he will be there as a junior reporter as the Odessa Invitational Regional Spelling Bee was not an official Scripps event this year.

Click on the two links below to get the story of how one of our ECISD teachers kept this year's bee going even without a sponsor, and how she plans to correct that problem for next year's contestant.

Are you ready for planting season?
