School is in session Monday

We received a few questions this week about President's Day on Monday, February 15 - it is NOT a holiday for ECISD. School will be in session as usual. See you in class!

New Tech team advances to state!

Big congratulations to the Academic Decathlon team from New Tech Odessa for qualifying for the state meet! They earned 38 individual medals and 2 team medals and earned a spot in the state competition in the small school division - outstanding!

Decathlon is an academic competition for high school students in ten academic areas. It is designed to include students from all academic backgrounds. Teams are comprised of 9 students and 3 alternates each: 4 "A" students, 4 "B" students, and 4 "C" students based on their overall grade point averages for the past two years.  During the competition, the nine team members compete in each academic category and attempt to meet a qualifying score which is pre-determined before the meet. In addition to a seven-minute interview, a one-hour essay and two speeches (four minutes prepared and two minutes impromptu), written comprehensive exams are given in music, art, language/literature, mathematics, economics, (social) science, and the Super Quiz. All students who meet or exceed qualifying scores receive individual medals, thus providing an opportunity for more students to be rewarded for their hard work.

Sweet scene

Pvt. 1st Class Felix Valenzuela came home last Tuesday and surprised his daughter Abigail at dismissal. Pvt. Valenzuela deployed from Fort Drum, NY, on April 18, 2015 and returned to the States January 7 but wasn't able to come to see his daughter until now. He is on block leave until February 17 when he will be returning to Fort Drum. Thank you, Pvt. Valenzuela for your service to our country - enjoy your time at home!

Giving credit where it is due

Students who attend school regularly are more successful in school than those who don't. Our students are learning critical things every day, and often there isn't something that a teacher can "send home" to truly get the student caught up; instruction and activities happen in the classroom. Parents who make school attendance a priority are also helping their children learn responsibility.

When Murry Fly Elementary recognizes students who have perfect attendance the Perfect Attendance awards are presented to the parents/guardians at the Semester Awards Assembly, recognizing them for their contributions to their child's education by making attendance a priority - after all they are the ones who get their children to school every day. One of the parents honored at the most recent awards assembly in January is Ms. Emma Gutierrez who received 5 Perfect Attendance awards for her grandchildren. She is their guardian. Ms. Gutierrez is dedicated to having her kids in school every day & we want to take this opportunity to recognize her, too!

Setting the record straight

This picture appeared in last week's newsletter but the caption was missing. We apologize for the error; it is all here today!

Congratulations to Odessa High School defensive lineman Brian McClure who signed a letter of intent with Tarleton State University last Wednesday. The 6-1, 315 pounder started for OHS for three years and was 1st team All District pick the last two years.

High school recruiting

ECISD boasts three high schools of choice and those schools are recruiting new students for next year right now. George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa opened in 2011 with a focus on project based learning and 1-to-1 technology; and our two early college high schools - OCTECHS & Falcon ECHS at UTPB - allow students to earn up to 60 hours of college credit (an associate degree or certificate) by the time they graduate from high school. OCTECHS offers career and technical training for students and Falcon ECHS emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM. Current 8th graders who are interested in learning more about these unique schools please plan to attend one of these parent meetings:
  • New Tech Odessa, 300 E. 29th - February 11, 6:00 p.m.
  • Falcon ECHS (UTPB) - February 18, 6:00 p.m.
  • OCTECHS held its final meeting on February 9; you can call 456-6982 for information
