National Signing Day edition

The first Wednesday in February is known as National Signing Day for high school seniors signing letters of intent to play their respective sports in college. It was a busy day at Permian High School and Odessa High School.

At 8:00 a.m. this crew of eight Permian Panthers held a signing party (above). Four of them are going to help the University of Texas of the Permian Basin launch their football program next fall! Those four are 1st Team All State running back Brandon Bailey, Honorable Mention All State linebacker Josh Nguyen, offensive lineman Trace Notley, and defensive back Robby Washington.

Also signing letters today - honorable mention All State cornerback Des Smith with Texas Tech; tight end Jack Fawcett with Colorado School of Mines; lineman Jacob Wheeler with Howard Payne University; and lineman Jesus Olivares with Midwestern State University.

And later in the day OHS golfer Reygan Rodriguez inked a letter of intent to Division III Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. Reygan has had a standout career on the links for the Bronchos, finishing in the top 10 of the district standings as a freshman, sophomore and junior. Each of the last two years she has advanced to the regional tournament.

Congratulations to all of these student-athletes, their parents, and their coaches and teachers!

Magnet Fair highlights schools of choice

What can ECISD's 9 magnet schools offer you?

The easiest way to find out is to attend this year's Magnet Fair on Saturday, February 6, from 10am-1pm in the Ector County Coliseum Barn G.

These nine elementary schools offer unique programs ranging from dual language instruction to performing arts to childhood engineering to a year-round calendar and more. Principals and teachers from each of the schools will be available that day to give information and answer questions about the various programs. Plan to attend!
High schools of choice are recruiting now, too!

In addition to our elementary magnet schools ECISD boasts three high schools of choice, too, and those schools are hosting parent meetings for next year's freshman classes. George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa opened in 2011 with a focus on project based learning and 1-to-1 technology, while our two early college high schools - OCTECHS & Falcon ECHS at UTPB - allow students to earn up to 60 hours of college credit (an associate degree or certificate) by the time they graduate from high school. OCTECHS offers career and technical training for students and Falcon ECHS emphasize science, technology, engineering, and math or STEM. If you are a current 8th grader and are interested in learning more about these unique schools please plan to attend one of these parent meetings:
  • Falcon ECHS (UTPB) - February 8, 6:00 p.m.
  • OCTECHS (Odessa College) - February 9, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
  • New Tech Odessa, 300 E. 29th - February 11, 6:00 p.m.
  • Falcon ECHS (UTPB) - February 18, 6:00 p.m.
