Perfect Practice Makes Perfect

For the fifth year in a row students at Milam Visual & Performing Arts Magnet School attended special master classes with Mr. John Madura, Concertmaster of the Midland Odessa Symphony Orchestra. This week he worked with Milam's Suzuki Violin students, teaching them to put their practice time to the best possible use by identifying and correcting problems with creative strategies.

At the end of the week Mr. Madura will join the students as they play for pre-k students at Lamar and Carver Early Education Centers and local nursing homes. This amazing opportunity for the Milam students is made possible through an Education Foundation grant!

Making the grade in Student Congress

At the school board meeting on January 19 ECISD Trustees honored Odessa High School junior Kennedi Cox, recognizing her achievement of qualifying for the State UIL Student Congress earlier this month. She finished just a few points shy of making the finals of the state competition.

Student Congress is an individual contest in a large group setting. It models the legislative process of democracy, specifically, the United States Congress. Within this mock legislative assembly competition, contestants draft legislation (proposed laws and position statements) submitted to the tournament. They research the docket of bills and resolutions dealing with real-world social and political policies prior to the contest to prepare their speeches. At the tournament, students caucus in committees, deliver formal discourse on the merits and disadvantages of each piece of legislation, and vote to pass or defeat the measures they have examined. They operate within Parliamentary procedure which forms the structure for the discourse, and students extemporaneously respond to others' arguments over the course of a session. The activity allows students to extend the skills of extemporaneous speaking, debate, and interpersonal communication.

The Lady Panthers softball squad celebrated a signing of its own last Friday when Elizabeth Chastain signed on to play at Midland College. She is seated in the middle (of course) wearing the green & gold MC t-shirt, surrounded by her Permian teammates.

Her signing garnered some local TV coverage, you can see the NewsWest 9 story here.
