New red hosses boss

Tuesday night a former Permian Panther standout stood up and took over the football program at Odessa High School. School board members formally approved Danny Servance as the new head football coach and athletic director for OHS. He was present at the school board meeting and, as you can see, was met by local sports reporters immediately afterward.

Servance is a 1986 graduate of Permian High School where he played on the Panthers '84 state championship team, and was an All State linebacker in 1985. He attended Baylor University to play football (lettering in 1989), and he graduated with a degree as a Communication Specialist. From August 1994 through March 2005 he worked in several different capacities at Permian HS including head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He left Odessa in February 2007 to take over the football program at Estacado High School in Lubbock. The program had eight consecutive losing seasons when Servance arrived but made the playoffs nine straight years after he was hired. He was the District 3-2A Coach of the Year in 2010. Welcome, Coach Servance!

Magnet Fair highlights schools of choice

What can ECISD's 9 magnet schools offer you?

The easiest way to find out is to attend this year's Magnet Fair on Saturday, February 6, from 10am-1pm in the Ector County Coliseum Barn G.

These nine elementary schools offer unique programs ranging from dual language instruction to performing arts to childhood engineering to a year-round calendar and more. Principals and teachers from each of the schools will be available that day to give information and answer questions about the various programs. Plan to attend!
High schools of choice are recruiting now, too!

In addition to our elementary magnet schools ECISD boasts three high schools of choice, too, and those schools are hosting parent meetings for next year's freshman classes. George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa opened in 2011 with a focus on project based learning and 1-to-1 technology, while our two early college high schools - OCTECHS & Falcon ECHS at UTPB - allow students to earn up to 60 hours of college credit (an associate degree or certificate) by the time they graduate from high school. OCTECHS offers career and technical training for students and Falcon ECHS emphasize science, technology, engineering, and math or STEM. If you are a current 8th grader and are interested in learning more about these unique schools please plan to attend one of these parent meetings:
  • OCTECHS, (Odessa College) - January 21 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Next stop, college

Permian High School senior Micah Seiler signed on the dotted line last Friday and became the second Panther to ink a college scholarship this year. Seiler signed with Odessa College. He's played several positions through high school but the plan is for him to be a pitcher at O.C. Congrats, Micah!

World Class Leader in Education

At the school board meeting on January 19 Ector County ISD Trustees honored Jordan Anderson, 2nd-grade teacher at Goliad Elementary as the World Class Leader in Education for January.

Jordan is in her second year with ECISD, and she is a member of the school district's Math Collaborative. She also worked as a campus technology specialist and math coach in Killeen ISD. She was a mentor teacher there, and helped on a math focus group at the Region 12 Education Service Center. She's done numerous professional presentations, taught children's church, and coached club volleyball.

Her colleagues say Ms. Anderson is a team member who is willing to go over and beyond for anyone on the staff or for her students. She holds others needs far before her own and puts her students' well-being at the forefront of anything she does on a day to day basis. Ms. Anderson is constantly on the hunt for new resources to use, and fun, exciting, engaging strategies to use in her classroom with her students. She takes the time to get technology in her student's hands every day and is constantly coming up with new ways to use technology in her instruction and assessment. Ms. Anderson is always willing to share with staff members her knowledge and the resources that are bringing so much success to her classroom; and she does so without expecting anything in return. She instills a love for learning in a safe and friendly environment for her class that is noticeable when you walk in her room. Ms. Anderson is at school every day with a smile on her face and a positive attitude that is contagious for all who come in contact with her. We are very, very lucky to have her as a World Class Leader on our Goliad Team!
