Home Library Giveaway

Literacy is the key, and the Education Foundation of Odessa believes in it so strongly it is giving away 50 home libraries to families that can't afford to buy books. This started as a grant request a few years ago and now is an annual project for the Foundation. One of their recent stops was at Travis Elementary School. Read more about the impact it has on the receiving families.
Computer Science Education Week

Burnet Elementary celebrated Computer Science Education Week (December 7-13) by having 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders participate in Hour of Code where they learned to write code for their own video games. Did you know coding is one of the fastest-growing and most lucrative sectors of the American economy? Hour of Code is sponsored by code.org and has free tutorials and games for students of all ages to learn to write code. Very cool!

Saturday Speech Therapy

Our Special Education Department deserves a shout out for its Saturday Speech Therapy program that began in December. Students from Zavala Elementary, Blackshear Elementary, EK Downing Elementary, and Fly Elementary are being offered services on Saturday because the speech department is currently understaffed and those schools do not have a speech pathologist on their campus.

December 5th was the first weekend of service and attendance was good. ECISD Transportation provided bus service to youngsters who would otherwise be unable to attend. There were four one-hour sessions held at the Special Ed Annex. The program is planned to continue through January, at which time we are hopeful two new therapists can be found to serve those four campuses. Thank you to our speech therapists for that extra effort and attention for our kids!

Making spirits bright...

The UTPB football team won't play until next year but the Falcons are already making an impact! Head coach Justin Carrigan and a group of UTPB players asked to adopt a local student and then graciously donated several Christmas gifts to a young man at Blanton Elementary. Way to go, UTPB Falcons football!

School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month in Texas, and we want to take this time to tell our Board of Trustees how much we appreciate the work they do!

Our school board is responsible for an annual budget of almost $229 million, 31,000 students, more than 3,500 full time employees, and 43 campuses. When you have the chance please tell our Trustees 'thanks for caring about our children and giving so much to our community.'

Thank you Nelson Minyard, Teri Ervin, Doyle Woodall, Dr. Steve Brown. Ray Beaty D.C., Dr. Donna Smith and Carol Gregg!
