Waffles means dollars for Make-a-Wish

On October 31 ECISD students teamed up for an impressive first-time fund raiser to benefit Make-a-Wish. Culinary Arts students made the waffles and omelets, while horticulture and fashion design students decorated. Numerous fine arts programs took turns entertaining with music and dance. On December 10 a group of the kids presented a check to the Make-a-Wish Foundation for more than $5,100!

A great first event and the student and teachers are already talking about next year's breakfast!

Leading the Way into Engineering

On Wednesday morning Zavala Elementary (student) Engineers hosted Ector Middle School Engineering students from Thomas Bauer's GT class. Mr. Bauer's middle school engineers, who are part of Project Lead the Way, presented their comprehensive projects to the Zavala students on topics ranging from Agricultural Engineering to Nuclear Engineering.

Zavala is the engineering magnet elementary school, so this was a great opportunity for the students to learn from older kids. This also served to highlight Project Lead the Way, a sequence of engineering elective courses that are available to students at four ECISD schools - Ector Middle School, Wilson & Young Middle School, Odessa High School, and Permian High School. Beginning in 7th grade students can take these courses through graduation, giving them a leg up if they choose to pursue engineering in college!
