Falcon Early College High School officially dedicated

The early college high school model is designed to get traditionally underserved students into college, and make it more likely they will finish college. Ector County ISD now has two of them, and in the words of Superintendent of Schools Tom Crowe, "early college high schools will change the Ector County community for the better." He expressed this sentiment during his remarks at Tuesday afternoon's dedication ceremony for the new ECISD Falcon Early College High School at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. H.E.B. puts dollars into local schools

H.E.B. made two sets of check presentations to our schools this week. The stores randomly selected six schools to be part of a new program called Primo Picks, where the school sends parents to H.E.B. to sample new fare and the store makes a donation based on the turnout (very similar to a spirit night at a local restaurant.)

On Monday afternoon Blanton Elementary, Reagan Elementary, and Ireland Elementary each received a $1,000 donation at the H.E.B. on 42nd Street, and then on Wednesday afternoon Gale Pond Alamo Elementary, Burnet Elementary, and Dowling Elementary received $1,000 in a short ceremony at the new store on West Loop 338. Thank you, H.E.B.!

Learning through doing

A dozen students from George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa are in Washington D.C. this week taking part in the Model Organization of the American States (MOAS). This student program is based on the Organization of American States which is touted as the world's oldest regional organization dating back to the First International Conference of American States held in Washington D.C. in 1889-1890.

The MOAS is designed to promote democratic values among youth through a simulation exercise where, through role-playing, the students represent the diplomats and political officials of the Member States of the OAS and follow parliamentary proceedings to debate and approve resolutions dealing with current issues on the Inter-American agenda. The Models foster the development of leadership skills in youth such as negotiation, team-work and problem solving.

This year the NTO students will be playing the role of Belize. You will find pictures from their conference on the school's Facebook page.

Panther Paws take New York City

The Permian High School Panther Paws dance team spent Thanksgiving in New York City as they took part in the 89th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The PHS girls were part of a larger group of performaners called Spirit of America, and they appeared near the end of the parade - after singer Mariah Carey and right before Santa Claus! While in New York the dance team took classes from professional dancers and saw a couple of Broadway shows!
