Receiving high honors

Congratulations to veteran teacher Robin Gutierrez and the Education Foundation of Odessa both recognized by Odessa College this week for their significant contributions to education!

Mrs. Gutierrez is a 26-year veteran teacher at Reagan Elementary and received the Odessa College Honors Award for an Educator, while the Education Foundation received the OC Honors Award for the outstanding non-profit organization. Both are truly deserving, and we are very proud to call them members of our ECISD team! That's Mrs. G below, and below that are Education Foundation president Sondra Eoff at the mic, with EF director Celeste Potter with her.

This is the 9th year for these OC awards. Two other categories recognized Thursday were business, H.E.B. and individual, former state representative & district judge Tryon Lewis.

The Archery Club at New Tech Odessa got quite a boost last week when the Pope & Young Club and the Texas Bowhunters Association donated five dozen arrows and $3,000 for new equipment to the group.

Mickey Estep, District 79 rep for the National Archery in Schools Program (pictured left) presented the donations. The Archery Club was started by teacher Pablo Davila, who also started a similar club when he was at Bowie Middle School. The students in the club say, "It's fun," and "Relieves stress." They say Mr. Davila (pictured far right) is "more like a coach than a teacher. He really cares."

2 more chances to join us

ECISD is still looking for volunteers to help evaluate programs like fine arts, health & PE, and parental involvement. These evaluations are required by the State, and the school district is holding public meetings now in an effort to recruit parents and community members to the 9 subcommittees. The last two public meetings will be:
Thursday, November 12, at Ector Middle School
Thursday, November 19, at West Elementary School
You need only attend one of these meetings in order to join a subcommittee. If you would like to see the nine areas to be evaluated and how each school scored in those nine areas last year, please follow this link.

Getting the real story

This group of six students and two teachers from Florida made a very quick trip to Odessa for the crosstown rivalry football game on October 30. They are from Oxbridge Academy, a private school in West Palm Beach, Florida, and their summer reading list included a book called Muck City, about a powerhouse football program in nearby Belle Glade, Florida. They made the connection to Friday Night Lights and that spawned the idea of visiting Odessa and seeing a football game here, which they did. They flew to Dallas and drove to Odessa on Friday, watched the Permian-OHS game and drove back to Dallas that night, and then flew back to Florida on Saturday!

What language is that? (LAST CALL ;-)

On Saturday, November 7, ECISD will hold its very first Language Fair, courtesy of our district's foreign language department. You'll find information about foreign languages offered at our schools, and experience these other cultures through food, music, games and contests. Check it out!
