Buice Elementary dedication

Buice Elementary is named for Dr. Lee Buice who directed the drama and speech programs at Odessa High School, taught at Odessa College for thirty years, and eventually taught at UTPB, too. She was an ECISD Trustee and a founding member of the Education Foundation of Odessa. Read more about the dedication ceremony for the new school named in her memory.

Red Ribbon Week

Friday, October 23, is the official kickoff day for Red Ribbon Week. Our ECISD schools will be taking part in this national awareness campaign all of next week. Each day will have a different theme, and schools will compete in door-and-foyer decorating contests. It is a fun way to address the serious topic of drug use, and to remember the life and death of federal agent Kiki Camarena who was murdered by members of a drug cartel in 1985.

ECISD will host a Red Ribbon Week kickoff in the parking lot of the Administration Building on Monday, October 26, at 10:00 a.m. Wear red and Just Say No to drugs!

World Class Leader in Education

Mark Patrick is ECISD's director of instructional technology. He's also served as the instructional technology coordinator and an instructional technology specialist. He's also worked as an adjunct profession at Texas A&M, producer at CableONE, and was a technology/yearbook/journalism teacher. In his current position he oversees the technology needs of our classroom teachers. He and the specialists are tasked with making sure classroom technology is in place, working, fixed when it doesn't cooperate, and they are always looking for new ways to bring technology into the classroom.

Mr. Patrick is extremely student-centered and has an unparalleled passion for teaching and learning. He is never too busy to help an employee in need, and is willing to put in hours after school or even on the weekends just to make sure everything is working properly. An example, at a principal's meeting, an administrator shared with the group that Mr. Patrick went to her school on a Saturday to help troubleshoot some problems with her computer. With such a level of support, it makes teachers and administrators more comfortable stepping out of their technological comfort zone and trying something different. Rather than simply fixing the problem, Mr. Patrick always takes the time to teach others what they can do differently next time in order to grow their personal skillset. He is intelligent, dependable, and always willing to take risks. He is well respected by students, parents, teachers, and campus administrators. Congratulations, Mark Patrick, our World Class Leader in Education for October.

Get a feel for a different culture

On Saturday, November 7, ECISD will hold its very first Language Fair, courtesy of our district's foreign language department. You'll find information about foreign languages offered at our schools, and experience these other cultures through food, music, games and contests. Check it out!
