Zavala kids remember 9-11

The 4th graders from Zavala Magnet Elementary don't remember the attacks of 9-11 but they definitely understand the message behind the commemoration of that day. This morning the school hosted a program and a breakfast for some of our local first responders, and the  4th graders took the lead with a song - American the Beautiful - and with thank you letters they wrote during a classroom writing assignment.

Representatives from the ECISD Police Department, Odessa Police Department, Ector County Sheriff's Office, Odessa Fire & Rescue, and the United States Air Force were present for the celebration.

The Education Foundation raises the bar for education

Thanks to The Education Foundation of Odessa and our local colleges there are now 300,000 reasons for ECISD seniors to make plans to go to college next year!

On September 10 The Education Foundation gave $50,000 to its scholarship fund at Odessa College.

And on September 2 The Education Foundation gave the same donation to its scholarship fund at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

With matching funds raised by each college, a total of $300,000 is waiting to be used by ECISD graduates at OC and UTPB.

They're there for literacy, too

The Education Foundation is all in for literacy, too!  Earlier this week the Foundation donated a book to every student at Dr. Lee Buice Elementary School. Buice Elementary is one of our new campuses, and Dr. Buice was a teacher and founding member of the Education Foundation.

The Foundation has also donated books to kindergarten students across the district, taking time to read to students when they do! This is Education Foundation coordinator Celeste Potter at Ross Elementary this week.

(Delayed) first day of high school

After a two week delay due to construction work, Odessa High School and Permian High School started classes on Tuesday. Both schools are going through big changes. Not only are they both opening new academic buildings (the biggest part of the bond passed in November 2012), but there are renovations taking place to existing buildings, and 9th-graders are now on the high school campuses instead of the junior highs.

As of the end of the week, OHS enrollment had moved just over 3,900 students and Permian's enrollment stood just over 3,600. The additional students and the construction have created issues for the morning drop off and afternoon pick up, and both schools will be looking for ways to improve traffic flow. We appreciate the patience of our staff, our students, and our parents as we go through all of these changes!

An eye to the future

On Tuesday, the ECISD Board of Trustees talked about the possibility of buying land for future school sites. While the local economy has cooled, school enrollment is still at near-record levels (more than 31,500 as of September 10), and the board is looking at two separate tracts of land in northeast Ector County.
