Early Release Day Coming Soon

The final Early Release Day is just two weeks away, on May 22. Just like the ones earlier this year elementary schools will dismiss at noon and secondary schools at 1:30 p.m. Parents of Pre-K students should call their child's campus to check the day's schedule.

Once upon a Dream

Students arrived by horse-drawn carriage for a truly special night at Permian High School. See more photos and read more about this "Once upon a Dream" night that is one of the most popular events of the year!

H-E-B's Great Gift

On May 5 H-E-B donated 500 copies of the book Coraline to 7th-grade AVID students in ECISD. The presentation was made at Bowie Junior High with students gather around, anxiously waiting to get their own copy.

Coraline is the young adult book chosen for the One Book Odessa reading campaign this year. Students also received tickets to the event with Coraline
author Neil Gaiman at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center on May 20 at 7:00 p.m.

Sweeping the nation!

Odessa High School students swept the nationwide Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program Essay Contest this spring. They won several prizes - a trophy, a certificate and a check! ECISD has the CCVYP in place at Odessa High where 64 students take part in it and help tutor students at Sam Houston Elementary and Goliad Elementary.

The Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program, created by the Intercultural Development Research Association, is an internationally-recognized, cross-age tutoring program with an unusual twist. This dropout prevention program works by identifying junior high and high school students in at-risk situations and enlisting them as tutors for elementary school youngsters who are also struggling in school. Given this role of personal and academic responsibility, the Valued Youth tutors learn self-discipline and develop self-esteem; schools shift to the philosophy and practices of valuing students considered at-risk. Results show that tutors stay in school, have increased academic performance, improved school attendance and advanced to higher education. In fact, its statistics show CCVYP has kept 98% of its tutors in school.

A Sweet Treat

The kids in Katrina Haecker's 3rd-grade class at San Jacinto Elementary presented several trays of gifts to their cafeteria ladies. The class made magnetic memo boards out of cookie tins, and wrote the "dozens" of reasons why they are thankful for their cafeteria workers. Their responses ranged from, "I like the brownies you make us" to "Thanks for always being there for us" and "Thanks for always smiling when you give us food." Very sweet. :-)
