A Work of Heart

January is School Board Recognition Month throughout Texas, and Ector County ISD is happy to take this time to say "thank you" to the seven men and women who devote so much of their time to our school district. Read more...

Arc of Success

On December 6, ten of our ECISD students participated in the first annual Odessa College "Weld Off" competition for high school students. Odessa High School and Permian High School each sent kids to the competition which included seven other school districts. First-year students with no prior welding experience took part in the Intro Welding Division, while students with experience competed in the Advanced Welding Division. Entrants had the chance to compete in five different contests.

All of our kids competed in the Advanced Welding Division and did well. OHS senior Ubaldo Rios (below left) stood out, winning 1st place; his prizes included a $300 scholarship to OC and a digital welding hood. Permian senior Adalberto Leyva (below right) took 3rd place which garnered him a $200 scholarship to OC and a digital welding hood.

The other students who competed in the "Weld Off" were Ezequiel Dominguez, Raul Cuevas, Marco Hernandez, David Duarte, Ventura Garza, Jason Baeza, Randy Walters, and Christian Garcia.

GT, indeed!

In October the Odessa Downtown Lions Club approached our GT Department and asked if our 6th-graders would be willing to take part in the club's International Peace Poster contest. A total of 85 entered the City competition and these three were named winners - from left to right Cheyenne Brewster (Blanton Elem), Adali Talamantes (Milam Elem), and Sopheah Owens (Noel Elem.) All three advanced to the District contest in El Paso, and in December they attended lunch at the Lion's Club and were awarded certificates and a $50 prize.

Cheyenne's work received an additional honor when it was chosen as the District winner in El Paso and was sent on to the state contest where she ultimately placed 2nd!

Locks of Love!

At Noel Elementary, this year's theme is "leading the way by giving back." Two teachers, Ms. Sylvia Feil and Ms. Senyda Huertas, did this by having their hair cut so it could be donated to Locks of Love. The cutting was done by cancer survivor Ms. Emily Droddy, the school librarian.  The book, Melissa Parkington's Beautiful Hair by Pat Brisson, was read to students to show what a positive thing donating your hair can be and that there are many people who benefit from these donations.

What does community engagement look like?

Just like last year we're calling on our community to get involved! One of the new provisions of our accountability system is that Community Engagement is considered when schools and school districts are rated each year. The twist - each community is tasked with building (and adjusting) its own framework for engagement. Last night we began hosting a series of Community Engagement Meetings. There will be four in all, to explain this process and recruit volunteers to help review the criteria developed last year. The rest of the meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • Monday, January 12          6:00-7:00 pm                at Crockett JH (2301 N. Conover)
  • Thursday, January 15       6:00-7:00 pm                at Goliad Elem (501 E. 52nd)
  • Thursday, January 22       6:00-7:00 pm                at Nimitz (4900 Maple)

You're invited to attend, as is anyone you think would be willing to donate their time. After these meetings are complete, a series of nine subcommittees will be formed to cover the areas of fine arts, wellness & physical education, community & parental involvement, 21st Century workforce development, 2nd language acquisition, digital language acquisition, dropout prevention, educational programs for GT, and statutory compliance. We hope you decide to join one of our groups!
