Friday Night Lightning

Today The Weather Channel featured Permian High School's football team and Odessa on its Friday Night Lightning: 12 Towns, 12 Weeks weather series. The feature aired throughout the day. A 2-man crew from The Weather Channel spent a day in Odessa last month shooting video of the City and of football practice, and interviewing head coach Blake Feldt and a couple of players. If you did not see the feature, you can find it at this link

History Comes to Life

Ector Junior High's 8th Grade U.S. History class took the issue of the Revolutionary War Acts to the streets this week. The appropriately named Eagles of Liberty protested outside Ector JH Thursday morning. They stood in the rain to let the British Crown know that the atrocities like the Sugar Act and Stamp Act are not going to be tolerated in Colonial America! The protest was cut a little short due to weather but all in all things went peacefully and the colonists felt their voices were heard!

How does your garden grow?

Earlier this week Kayla McCloud's kindergarten class at Gonzales Elementary received the Stripes Fresh Learning Garden Grant seeded by Laredo Taco Company.

The grant includes seeds to make pico de gallo: Jalapenos, onions, cilantro, and onions as well as $200 for supplies and other materials to build a garden. The staff at Gonzales also recieved a "Get a Fresh Start" lunch taco party from Laredo Taco Company.

World Class Leader in Education

Congratulations to Carole Buhr our World Class Leader in Education for October. Carole is a math teacher and math department chair at Nimitz Junior High School.

She's been honored at her campus several times - the school's faculty nominated her as "Ms.Nimitz," and students have given her awards like "most likely to help a student when they are really in need" and "the ability to motivate me" award. That is high praise.

Carole not only teaches math to her students she also helps them to learn discipline, organization, and to have pride in their school. She works tirelessly as head of the math team by creating PowerPoint lessons, interactive notebook foldables, and even incorporates writing into her unit tests - which helps the English Language Arts & Reading teachers. She is a true team player and invaluable.

Mrs. Buhr attends many games of her students which shows them that she cares, and with that caring she encourages them to strive to do their best in her class. That may not be officially called a learning strategy but it is central to how the students perceive her and her class. She believes they are important and in turn they treat her class as important.
