ECISD CAN

On October 3rd Mr. Crowe held the first session of his ECISD CAN initiative.

CAN stands for Community Action Network. He asked the principal of each school to recommend two community members to be part of this group, which will meet once a month through the school year. Nearly 40 people attended this first one.

Each month different departments will be introduced, talk about their roles within the school district, and answer questions. The goal of ECISD CAN is to give parents and other people in the community a chance to learn more about how the district operations and get a better understanding of the way decisions are made.

The meeting started with the hottest topic of the year - proposed boundary changes. A presentation from the Communications Department, Volunteers & Partners, and the Education Foundation followed.

Energy Savings

October is Energy Awareness Month and we will continue to tout the importance of saving energy wherever we can. Is it worth the effort? We say, yes. Since starting our Energy Program in May 2012 our school district has saved $3,138,707 in electricity & utility costs!

Fuel Your School is underway

For the second year in a row Chevron, local Kent Kwik stores, and DonorsChoose.org are teaming up to provide grant funds for teachers. We know many teachers are already familiar with this program but if you're not here's a quick rundown of how it works:

  1. Teachers can go to DonorsChoose.org and submit a grant proposal detailing the materials and supplies they need for a classroom project. DonorsChoose.org does place restrictions on the types of projects and materials it will approve.
  2. Once approved and posted by DonorChoose.org, donors from all around the world can choose to make donations, and if fully funded, the materials are delivered to your school for you.
  3. During the month of October for each fill up of 8 or more gallons of gas at Chevron or Texaco stations, Chevron will donate $1 to a project of an Ector County teacher up to $100,000.

Fill up at Kent Kwik stores this month and you can help fund some of our classroom projects posted on DonorsChoose.org.

Dueling Teachers???

A fun show down on the fine arts hall! Open House at Ector JH included these dueling teachers - Tamara Conn on piano & Vincent Pierce on harp.

I Scream...You Scream...

We had another chance to celebrate our Region 18 Teachers of the Year today. Both of their campuses set up surprise celebrations and Blue Bell Ice Cream donated treats for everyone to share!

As you may recall, Candy Thompson, Video Technology/Digital Graphics & Imaging teacher, at the New Tech Odessa campus and Stephanie Green, 1st-grade teacher at Hays Magnet Academy, were selected as the Region 18 secondary and elementary teachers of the year last June. Next week they will be honored by Region 18, and later this month they will be recognized with the rest of the regional teachers of the year at a ceremony in Austin.

The folks at Blue Bell Ice Cream heard about their honors and asked to be part of the school's parties today. Representatives from Blue Bell read a note of congratulations to each teacher from the company's CEO, presented each teacher with four half-gallons of their favorite flavors, and gave each teacher a coffee table book of the 100-year history of the creamery. They brought enough frozen treats for everyone in attendance, too!

Ms. Green is one of three finalists for the state elementary teacher of the year. The winner will be announced at that meeting in Austin in a few weeks...good luck Ms. Green!
