John B. Hood Update Timeline to re-open campus still unknown
ECISD board of Trustees received an update on the situation at John B. Hood Junior High during this month's regularly scheduled board meeting. The issue appears to be a bigger than originally anticipated because students and staff unknowingly tracked mercury residue throughout the campus.
Mike McAteer from the Environmental Protection Agency explained the agencies currently working on the school are moving as fast as possible while being thorough with the clean up efforts. Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Thomas Crowe thanked all faculty, staff and administration that have worked tirelessly to make this unprecedented situation as smooth as possible. Educational Dynamic Duo
Cavazos and Odessa College bring education to parents
On March 20, Cavazos Elementary welcomed visitors from Odessa College to begin Parent University. This partnership will offer parents various options to continue their education, including English as a second language classes and other college level courses.
OC Staff even promoted the new partnership to the parents in the pick up line during Thursday's dismissal. |
Groundbreaking Ceremony Expansion begins at OHS
ECISD hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on March 26 for the upcoming construction at Odessa High School. The renovations are part the phase 1 construction plan outlined in the Bond 2012. Ray Beaty, Board of Trustees President thanked the community for its support while the district strategically plans for a new-look ECISD with a true middle school grade alignment.
The district will host two other events this spring, one for renovations at Permian High School and another for the new elementary schools projects. Delivering a Crucial Message Former OHS Broncho, now NFL lineman visits Burnet
Students at Burnet Elementary intently listened as Marcus Cannon spoke to them them during an assembly on March 17. A graduate of Odessa High School, Marcus now plays in the National Football League as an offensive lineman for the New England Patriots. During the assembly, Marcus explained to students the importance of being responsible, respectful and not being a bully.
Some students and staff received his football cards, pictures with Marcus and even his autograph! Thanks to Marcus for returning home to offer such great words of wisdom.

College Bound! PHS student athletes sign letters of intent
Congratulations to four of our Permian High School Volleyball players who signed letters of intent on March 20 to play college volleyball. Katie Reeves and McKenna Thomas will be playing for Sul Ross University in Alpine, Jessica Ibarra is off to Ranger College, west of Fort Worth and Aleana Crow is heading to Midland College. Great job girls and best of luck! |
Environmental Excellence ECISD saving millions with energy education program At the school board meeting on March 25, Cenergistic presented its Environmental Excellence Award to ECISD for the district's outstanding energy efficiency. Gary Clark, regional president for Cenergistic also presented an over-sized check which served to visualize the $1.9 million dollars saved in energy consumption-including electricity, water, sewer, natural gas and fuel oil-using Cenergistic's energy education program over the last 14 months.
Mr. Clark made sure sure to point out that since the printing of that check, ECISD has raised those savings to over $2 million dollars!
