"Do the Write Thing"
Nimitz JH student earns trip to Washington D.C.
Do the Write Thing winner

In the center of this picture is Nimitz's Blake Dominguez. In the spring, he earned a free trip to Washington D.C. as an ambassador for the "Do the Write Thing Challenge." This essay contest asks students to write about the impact of youth violence on their lives. It is estimated that nationwide about 75,000 7th-graders wrote essays for this program and the top 50 were chosen as ambassadors! Congratulations to Blake, who is flanked by his parents Donna and Chrespin, and to his English teacher Michelle Thomas (far left) and principal Robin Fawcett (far right.)

Hailey (kindergarten) & Desiree (2nd grade) are the record setting students -- there was no way we were going to pick one instead of the other! The girls and their family just moved here from McAllen. Welcome and congratulations!
Saving energy adds up
Energy ed program is beginning its second year

Our school district is using an energy education program through a company called Cenergistic. The program provides proven guidelines for heating and cooling our buildings (among other cost-saving activities) in order to reduce electric and utilities costs. The numbers so far are impressive. Since May 2012 our school district has saved more than $1.2 million in these costs, saving $167,000 (32%) in electricity costs this June alone. That is money that can then be used for other priority areas like salaries or supplies.
