Dude, he's getting a Dell-Scholarship

DeKwannOn April 10 Odessa High School senior, DeKwaan Wynn learned he had won the prestigious Dell Scholarship from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. DayDay, as he is known by his family and friends, will receive $20,000, a notebook PC, and a printer. In addition the Dell Scholars Program provides its students with a private scholar networking community, resources, and mentoring to ensure they have the support they need to achieve their college degree.

The Dells work to recognize students who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their educations. DayDay is part of the AVID program which identifies students with the potential to go to college but who often lack the support to get there. DayDay told members of the ECISD Board of Trustees that he struggled in junior high but AVID and athletics kept him busy enough to stay out of trouble. He will be attending Baylor University in the fall, plans to major in Economics and then go to law school, and he will compete on the Baylor track & field team.

Energy Management program saves big $$$

Energy Specialists

These two guys are helping save ECISD a lot of money!

Tony Parris and Patrick Young are the District's energy specialists and they spend their days (and nights, and weekends, and holidays) checking to make sure that we are saving energy wherever possible. Since ECISD joined Cenergistic last spring Tony & Patrick have done 25-30 building visits each week - more than 2,000 energy audits! And it is paying off in a big way...from May 2012 to February 2013 their work has helped cut utility bills by $14.9% which translates to $715,686! That money can then be spent in other areas, like salaries...

Trustees approve raises

During their meeting on April 16 Trustees approved the salary schedule for the 2013-14 school year. It includes a $1,000 raise for all teachers plus another $2,000 as a retention incentive to be paid in two installments in December and May. This is for all employees on the Teacher Salary Schedule - specifically teachers, counselors, media specialists (librarians) and nurses.

All other employees will receive a 2% raise based on the mid-point of their salary range. Instructional aides will also get an $800 retention incentive to be paid in two installments in December and May.

Finally, the school board took immediate action to increase pay for bus drivers in hopes of staying competitive in hiring and keeping drivers. The starting pay for bus drivers will increase to $13.75 from $12.09 and all of our veteran drivers will get a pay increase, too. New drivers will receive a $500 sign-on stipend.

Library Week & e-books

This is National Library Week and it seems an appropriate time to promote the e-books that ECISD has available for students. The District uses a provider called Follett Shelf - think of it as a bookshelf on the internet.

The link to this online bookshelf is available on the website of every school in ECISD. Students use their school ID as a Username and Password to gain access to the books, which are the same from school to school at each grade level. These are not simply textbooks, but many fiction and non-fiction titles and other resources.

The books can be read online via computer, tablet, or Smartphone - any device with internet access. Or books can be downloaded to those same devices and kept for up to 14 days - just like checking a book out of the library. The books are accessible to students 24/7 throughout the year.
