Bond news update | |

The work of turning the recently approved bond proposal into five new buildings is underway!
On November 15 the ECISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve negotiation of architectural services for the bond projects. The law requires school districts to seek architects through a request for qualifications process, not a bid process. The school board then approves the administration to negotiate a fee for the projects. In this case three different architectural firms will be used, each one designated to work on an individual aspect of the bond proposal. The firm Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper will design the elementary school package (that is one model that will be used for all three new schools) - this firm recently completed similar work on four new schools in Big Spring; JSA Architects will handle the addition at Odessa High School because they have done much of the other renovation design at OHS; and Hunter Corral Associates will do the addition at Permian High School because they have done much of the other renovation designs at PHS. Once fees are negotiated the design work will begin.

We salute our veterans! |
Many of our ECISD students took part in community Veterans' Day activities. Among them...
Below: The choir, orchestra, and band from Nimitz Junior High performed at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Veterans Affairs Permian Basin Community Based Outpatient Clinic at MCH's Mission Fitness complex. The combined group of kids performed "The National Anthem," "Blades of Grass and Pure White Stones," and "I Hear America Sing," and they got rave reviews from the audience!
On Wednesday, November 14, Ross Elementary celebrated in a big way by taking part in the Take a Veteran to School promotion by the History channel and the Odessa office of CableOne. The national program, which began in 2007, links veterans with students - and the kids receive t-shirts and wristbands as part of their participation.
Five current of former members of the military spent 45 minutes answering questions from the school's third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders. The students wanted to know what it is like being in a war, living in other countries, and how hard military life is. The five veterans - U.S. Marine Sgt. Gabriel Trevino and U.S. Marine Cpl. Isamar Loya; and U.S. Army Staff Sgt. James Kenimer, U.S. Army Specialist Esai Romo, and U.S. Army Specialist Torie Beecher - told stories of their service and encouraged the kids to work hard in school.
Sgt. Trevino described his experience of riding on an elephant through the middle of the city while stationed in Bangkok, Thailand, and Cpl. Loya held the students' attention with her tale of jumping out of a plane during airborne training! Four of the five veterans are our kids - Loya, Kenimer, and Beecher graduated from Permian and Romo from OHS. Sgt. Trevino grew up in Amarillo so he's good, too!

Honors & awards | |
On November 15 members of Odessa Fire/Rescue presented Milam principal Staci Ashley (far right) with the award for being the Top Elementary School in Odessa for their participation in Fire Prevention Month activities. This is the second year in a row Milam has won the award and the third time overall. Way to go Milam!
On November 20 the Ector County Health Department made a special presentation to the cafeteria staff at Ector Junior High. Cafeteria manager Shirley Price accepted a Certificate of Achievement award given by the health department for outstanding efforts in food protection and conscientious sanitation practices. Each year four restaurants and one school district cafeteria are selected for this recognition which is a way to publicly acknowledge the hard work necessary for the restaurant owners/managers to operate and maintain safe food service operations. Ms. Price and her cafeteria staff are pictured -- way to go Ector Eagles!

Tee it high and let it fly! | |
Congratulations to Odessa High School golfer Alyssa Carter after she signed a scholarship offer from NAIA power Lubbock Christian University. She's pictured with her parents and OHS girls golf coach Berry Borchardt. You may remember Alyssa was also recognized at a recent school board meeting for advancing to the State Citizen Bee in Austin last spring and she is ranked in the top ten academically at OHS.
