 Bond proposal passes

Bond Thank You

The bond proposal passed by an overwhelming 63-37 margin. That means ECISD will be building three new elementary schools to relieve overcrowding in the west and north parts of the county and new buildings at Odessa High School and Permian High School to accommodate 9th-graders on those campuses. Our goal is to have these buildings open and a middle school grade alignment in place by August 2014. There is a lot of work to be done and we will be updating you on the progress throughout the building process.

Thank you very much for your support of this measure and for your commitment to helping our school district pursue its goal of being world class!

Just do it!

The students in the business and marketing classes at Permian High School received quite a treat last Friday as four members of NIKE's marketing and production teams conducted focus groups with the teenagers. NIKE product line manager Brian Chilton is from Lubbock and graduated from Texas Tech and he wanted to gain some insight into the attitudes and preferences of kids in West Texas. At the beginning of the school year he requested to visit PHS as part of the group's focus group tour.

NIKE

Each class period started with students answering a series of survey questions about themselves and about the various hoodies that the reps brought with them. With surveys complete the NIKE guys answered all sorts of questions about their jobs, their backgrounds, and what it is like to work for one of the world's largest companies and marketing giants. After lunch the group from NIKE visited the Graphic Design classes at NTO.

 NIKE 2

A couple of the nuggets the guys shared with our students: if they want to work for NIKE someday they should get a job working in a sports apparel store now and learn as much about NIKE products as they can; NIKE employees use a lot of math, statistics, chemistry, and physics (yes, you use those subjects in the real world) in the design, production, and marketing of their stuff; it takes, on average, 18 months for a new item to go from design concept to hanging in the store; and the big stars who endorse NIKE get special treatment - for instance there is only one woman who sews all of Tiger Woods' pants to ensure the fit is precise every time!

TAME Trailblazer rolls through Odessa

Science is cool! That's the message the TAME Trailblazer delivers as it crisscrosses Texas introducing a variety of science and engineering exhibits to students in grades 3-7. The Trailblazer made its way to Odessa during the last week in October with stops at Burnet, Travis, and Noel elementary schools.

As they pass through the 40-foot trailer students stop at five different exhibits - Energy for Tomorrow, Space Matters, The Power of Weather, Need for Speed, and Marvels of Medicine. Each station offers hands-on activities to engage the kids.

Noel sixth grade teacher Jeff Vann said he has been trying for two or three years to get on the Trailblazer's schedule and it finally worked out. Read more about the TAME Trailblazer at http://www.tame.org/programs/trailblazer. TAME stands for Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering. The pictures are from last Thursday's stop at Noel.

TAME 1

Above: These three boys (with VIP Tiffany Tucker) study aerodynamics, specifically the Bernoulli Effect (as air or any other fluid flows faster over a surface it exerts less pressure on that surface) with a hair dryer and a ball.

Below: Everyone got a real kick (shock) out of the Van de Graaf generator which demonstrated how an electrical current can pass through one person to another due to the fact that our bodies are 70% water and water is a conductor of electricity (VIP Stacy Sauer led the charge!)

 TAME 2

Below: 5th-grader Zaraiya demonstrates Newton's Third Law of Motion (for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction). She held the spinning tire while standing on a small disc; when she tilted the wheel to the left, the disc she was standing on turned to the right and vice versa. Very cool!

 A Hero for Children

Congratulations to one of our great VIPS, Georgia Hayse. On November 16 she will be honored at a ceremony in Austin as one of 15 statewide Heroes for Children! This award is given by the State Board of Education as a means to recognize outstanding volunteer service to schoolchildren. This is Georgia's 21st year to VIP in ECISD. She works at Gonzales Elementary now but has been active at Milam Elementary, Bonham Junior High, and Permian High School through the years. She's totaled a whopping 13,400 hours of volunteer time for our District. This is a huge honor! Georgia is pictured below with some of "her kids."

 John Wilkins Field
On November 2, ECISD officials honored former Permian High School football coach John Wilkins with an award and the announcement that the District intends to name the new practice at Permian after Wilkins. At halftime of Permian's game vs. Midland Lee, Wilkins, his family, and a number of his former players stood at midfield while the coach's accomplishments were listed:

  • Two Class 5A state championships; 1980 & 1984
  • Ten district championships in his 13 years as head coach (1973-1985)
  • Overall record of 148-16-6; a winning percentage of nearly 89%
  • Inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2003
  • Served as ECISD Athletic Director

Permian principal Roy Garcia presented an award to Coach Wilkins and, pending school board vote, a sign will be constructed to name the practice field as "John Wilkins Field" at Permian.

Remembering Nik

Nik Moralez

On Monday, November 5, family and friends of Nik Moralez turned out to remember him and see the unveiling of his memorial statue. You may recall that Nik, a student at Bonham Junior High, was killed in a car accident on his way home from the last day of school last May. Since then, Hispanic Heritage and LULAC have been working with Ratliff Ranch Golf Course to have a statue memorializing Nik placed on the golf course grounds. Nik was an avid golfer, like his dad Danny. A large crowd attended the memorial including Texas State Representative Tryon Lewis. The bronze statue of a young golfer sits at the southwest corner of the club house. In the picture Nik's family gathers near the statue moments after it was unveiled for the first time.
